CruxGNZ
My right turn signal is kind of working. It turns on sometimes when I want it to, but it doesn't blink fast at all, maybe 5 seconds between blinks when it works, but then it will shut off after 3 or 4 blinks. I figure after being told many times that it was my hazard switch that is the culprit, I would remove it and clean it. Alright, how the heck do you get that switch out of the dash? I unscrewed the retaining nut on the front, but how do you remove the knob to push it through the dash? Furthermore, how do you remove the center counsole to get at the back of the hazard switch? I can't seem to get the heater controls off the back of the center counsole. What a pain. I searched and didn't find anything about removing this stuff, so I figured it was fairly simple... yeah, right! I just didn't want to break stuff by forcing anything, so I figured I would ask. !M! spotfitz
The hazard switch on the center console is just a snap in holder that houses the switch. It's easiest to push it out from behind, preferably with the radio out, pulling the console loose or from the shifter hole. My guess would actually be your turn signal switch. It would be a good idea to clean it aswell. Watch how much you bend the tabs. They tend to break.
datsunan
I broke my hazard switch tring to get it out. You just push it in and turn it right or left, it comes out really easy if you know how. The heater controls are not so easy, they are screwed to the center console so the easiest way to get the console out is to un-hook the cables where they attach to the coil and dampers. You should be able to get the hazard switch out without taking it off.
CruxGNZ
Thanks guys. Spotfitz, my hazard switch is located right below the cigarette lighter on my '73, so it's difficult to get to it. So, I can just turn the knob off and push it through the dash? I guess I'll give it a shot. I just didn't want to break it. I did clean my turn signal switch and headlight switch not to long ago. Somehow the headlight switch had a melt down after I cleaned it . The turn signal switch worked fine afterwords, but now I have problems. I'll post about what happens after I futz with it a bit. !M! CruxGNZ
I can't get the hazard switch out of the dash. I've tried everything except for a BFH. I've gone as far as unscrewing the retaining nut behind the knob, but then what? I have the hazard switch pushed in and have turned it left or right, but it just spins, nothing comes loose. Just so there is no confusion about what hazard switch I'm talking about (there are a couple designs), I have included a picture below. Also, where the heck is the flasher for the right turn signal on a '73? I can't listen for it anymore, because now the right turn signal doesn't even work. I have a FSM around here, but I've lost it. Thank you. !M!
lilj
ive got a haynes sittin here in my lap and it has a completely diff hazard button than your car does.. so i have like no damn clue at all.. the one they have just has 4 little clips, and all you do is push it out from the back. wish i had the info you needed but the damn book only shows 1 kind of switch =( hope someone replies that can help you. fastzcars
I Think the flasher is located right above and behand the hood release lever. At least thats where my flasher was located. I can't be 100% sure because I replaced the whole wiring harness with an aftermarket kit. But I'am 98% sure it's there. As far as the turn signal not working check your grounds in the back of the car. behind the taillight panel. or the light sockets themselves, they're known to get pretty well corroded. The hazard switch, I have no idea, my switch was broken in half. I just remembered that 2 small screws on a bracket held that sucker in. You might want to get a flash light and lay on your back on the floor to get a beter looking behind the dash. Sorry for not having definate answer's. datsunan
I have a 73 and have removed mine befor. As posted earlier you need to push it in and turn it, the part I let out is that you only need to turn it 1/4 turn right or left and then releive the pressure on it and it will fall off in your hand,,,,easy. There is a post coming out of the switch that inserts into a hole in the knob that loos like --O-- if you were looking the end of the post also looks like --O-- but it is at a 45deg to the knob hole, so if you push in and turn it 1/4 and then let it out wala. Your blinkers both work off the same flasher left side kick panel above the hood release. If on side is not working first check your turn signal mechanism spray it with contact cleaner and work it in on/off/on/off. It also won't blink if to many possibly if even one of your bulbs is burnt out check them first front and back , check the bulb, socket clean it. Then spray your hazard switch and work it. Good luck the lights can be a pain. Paul
Bartman
I couldn't figure out how to remove my Hazard switch from the dash as well. Datsunan was on the right track, but I still couldn't get it to work. I found this post at classiczcars and i got it off right away "there's a spring clip in the knob itself. Push in about 1/8" and turn counterclockwise a quarter-turn and it pops off". I actually removed the switch by pulling out the entire post...luckily it didn't break and I was able to reinsert it. Now I can easily remove and replace the knob properly. I bet a lot of these pull-type switches have been broken by people trying to remove them.
