Guest ON3GO
Ok my new 77 280Z is having a fuel problem. im 99% sure its fuel so thats why i say that. its a reg L28 and stock. When driving sometimes it will stumble and then be fine for abit. Most the time im driving along and try to give it gas and you can hear in the exhaust a muffel sound, like its giving it to much fuel,.... and if you try to rev it up when this is happening it wont rev up past like 3K RPMS's. and if you dont keep the revs up and just get off the car the car dies. and when you try to start it up after it dies its very hard to start.. takes a few trys and then even then sometimes its still doing it. Also when it does it when im just sitting at a light you feel the car start to idle real low and if you dont give it gas it will die, and if you do give it gas it sounds like the motor is just getting flooded. what you guys think it is? the car has a high 1200rpm idle and backfires from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. mike
Tim240z
Pull out the L6 and put in a V8! (that's my universal answer to any L6 problems)
Guest ON3GO
i have another motor that im putting in it.. L28ET (V8 Killer) but untill i do that which im hoping is soon, i still need to figure this out. school is a hike and so is my new "job" so cant be breaking down every stop light. mike
EvilRufusKay
It sounds like a fuel problem until you say it backfires. That sounds more like ignition/timing or a vacum leak. Do you smell gas?
Guest ON3GO
yeah i smell some gas... but its hard to tell you know. i was thinking fuel because sometimes when i drive normal and just have my foot on the gas pedal keeping it at say 50mph.. all of a sudden it feels like the car got a hit of boost and starts going faster. but then again that could be timing too. damn im confused mike
EvilRufusKay
Has it always done this or did it just start?
Guest ON3GO
started like 3 weeks ago.. did it once awhile.. now its doing it alot! like every 5 or so mins. mike
EvilRufusKay
I would check the timing and vacum leaks. If it all seems ok, see if you can scam a fuel pump fo a quick swap/check. I honestly dont know much about the L6 is it carbed or EFI? If it is EFI and the problem is somewat random it could be a sensor going wacko as well. Good luck I will check back later. Guest ON3GO
its EFI.. thanks. i thought it could be the pump but i dunno.. ill check it out thanks again man mike
David K
Check out the TPS on the side of the throttle body. Just unplug it and drive. Its ok, it wont harm anything. I had a bad tps, and the revs bounced at 3,000 rpm. It happened when it got wet also. Just unlug it and give it a whirl.
Guest ON3GO
i did what david k told me to do.. it might have worked.. the rpms did go down to normal on idle and it did stop backfiring, and didnt do what i was having a problem with. BUT it didnt do it for the last 10mins i drove it before i parked it today. so im confused and guessing it fixed it. mike

Guest ON3GO
ok problem again... it was fine when i took the tps sensor off but after 10 or so mins of driving the idle shot down to 500rpms and then the car died. it took awhile for me to start it too. does these cars have closed loop or something? like it was 100% fine from sense i started it to about 10mins down the road and then the car just crapped out. i had to plug the tps back in and the idle went back to 1300rpms and it started back firing again from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. and it als started flooded in the motor again. HELP! Mike
