Pertronix should make a drop in electronic module for a Z distributor. Take out the points, drop in the Pertronix module, attach two wires and go. You should be able to get one from MSA or Classic Datsun Motorsports or any number of places. $75 or so.

you can bolt in any normally aspirated distributor, you'll need the base with the dist as they canged a bit as well, also the caps changed, the wiring is quite easy and you can opt for an aftermarket non ballasted coil, and they can be found on junk motors everywhere ! I have run every type of z dist in my car before going turbo I'd suggest the 280Z dist and an aftermarket coil, wiring is a snap and you won't run out of spark at high rev's anymore, a lot of people perfer the 280ZX dist becasue of the replaceable module on the side I see it as one more possible part to fail

Im running an 81 zx dizzy in my 75 280 and I love it. Simply 'plug and play' as it were... two wires, and bam; away it goes. (My 30 year old Z starts faster than my 10 year old king cab!) I assume the module will fail someday, but when it does I'll get another one from somewhere, (plenty of zx's still around) or just ditch it and hook up the MSD box I have.

i would recommend avoiding clumsy distributors and electronic ignitions. for as much/less than a high end electronic, you can get a more capable direct ignition setup.

check this out:

http://www.electromotive-inc.com/products/xdi.html

the kit was $500 in 1998, not sure what it is now. my kit is the hpv-1. the later model was hpv-x. either one of those you can probably find for a few hundred i would imagine.

evidently the next generation just came out, but does the same thing my unit does. the xdi is $850 (dont know why its higher, dont know whats new)

no shit, from the ignition and its timing curve alone, i gained 15% hp and 19% torque on my 3.1L with triple webers (using av gas). (dynoed results)

if you arent racing in a class that requires a distributor, do it.

best of luck!
