Guest 2fortyZ
I know this isn't a "tech" article, but im trying to get some information ASAP. So I'm going to try posting this in a 'high traffic' area in hopes to get some responses fast. thank you and sorry for the inconvenience Okay, here is my situation. I need to sell my car because in a year or so I am going to be heading off to college. I need help finding a price to sell my car for, because most of the Z's in Autotrader are garbage and I really have nothing to compare the pricing to. I guess I shall make a list with everything my car has and has had done to it since I've had it and if you can, give me some estimate of the cars worth, or offers if anyone is willing to purchase it..... 1973 datsun 240z Drivetrain 20,000 miles on the rebuilt 2.4 liter engine. The head is shaved a bit for a little higher compression New Z therapy SU's with the SM needles K&N air filters Electronic ignition Header/full exhaust Engine Dress Up kit from Motorsport auto The car originally was an Automatic, I converted it to a 5 speed manual, and I put the r200 rearend in with 3.90 gears. The rear has all new bushings in the mustache bar and everything back there. I also have a spare used 5 speed tranny and a rebuilt auto tranny from when we did the swap. I shall give these along with whatever other Z stuff I have to the buyer of the car. The engine runs perfect and has NEVER overheated on me while I have driven in traffic in 90-100 degree weather. To sum it all up, everything in the engine bay is practically brand new and the engine runs like a dream.... Brakes & Suspension I have put new brakes all around, on the front I just put all the new stock calipers and what not on, I did the rear disk conversion from Modern Motorsports in the back with stainless lines. As suspension goes, I lowered it with the motorsport auto springs about 1.5 inches all around. I also upgraded the front sway bar and added a rear one to the car. Interior & Exterior The interior of the car is immaculate. It has the original dash with ZERO cracks in it, it has a dash mat as well. New grant 'Z' steering wheel. the seats have some little stains (dime sized) in them, but they are in excellent condition for how old the car is.... New Full Interior carpet kit. The stereo is excellent too. Pioneer head unit, two 6x9's in sealed boxes, four 5 1/4's, two 2 1/2's, and one BRAND NEW 12" rockford fosgate punch HE, and a rockford fosgate 250w-2 bridged to 500w to the sub. pretty much its sounds SUPER CLEAN. It still has the original paint, but there are dents, dings, door dings, and some little rust areas. A little TINY bit of rust around the hatch area, the floor pans are perfect, the battery area is perfect. If the car needed anything, a paint job is all it needs, but even in pictures the paint looks super clean. The car also has a new front Air dam from motorsport auto and the smoked lense covers over the headlights. Current BRAND NEW things on the car are tires. They probably have about 300 miles on them...if that. If I have missed anything or you guys have questions, please give me some feedback. You may also get a hold of my by a PM or you can e-mail me at xxkevxx7@aol.com. I will be getting some pictures together as soon as I do a full detail on the car. So hopefully within the next couple days i shall get some pics together for anyone who wants to see the car. Thanks for everything. Tim240z
Put it on Ebay with a $200,000.00 reserve. See what it is bid up to. That will give you a good indication of what it is worth to the market. If the final bids are acceptable, contact the bidders and offer it at that price. Tim

Guest Citizen_Insane
If I had 5 grand I'd be all over that deal! But I'm poor and going to college next year too 8)
Guest Aaron
Why are you getting rid of it? You will need a car in college. If it is paid for, you might as well keep your cool car and not settle for some econobox. I speak from experience. I traded by '81 ZXT (with the factory snowfakes ) for an Escort GT which I totaled in a year (the brakes sucked on that car). I should have just fixed what was wrong and I would not have been shelling out that $160 payment and $100 of insurance every month.

Nismo280zEd
Yeah.. havn' un-reliable transportation in college sucks! workn' on your car in the dorm parkn' lot bumming jacks and jack stands from kids is not cool. Especially when it snows. WRX very nice 8) aaron... you only paid 100 bucks for insurance?!? I pay 185 for full coverage on the Z !!! -Ed
bubbleguinea
Id say around $5500-$6000 for the z.....
Guest bastaad525
WRX's are nice... on the other hand, I work at a tow truck company and let me tell you, just going from how many we tow on say, a per week basis, I gather they are not the most reliable new car out there either. Z's on the other hand... super reliable, not to mention, not everyone has one (WRX's getting too common nowadays), and of course, lots of other great benefits like no smog, light chassis (easy to make go, stop, and handle good) and the fact that they are true classics. I wouldn't trade your Z for a WRX... the loss of 'cool' factor just kills that deal. Plus you will have monthly payments and much higher insurance... your Z is already "done" and should be mostly problem free which means, not dumping money into it all the time. If you just need speed, make the Z faster instead... I would say, take one years worth of what your monthly payments would be on the new suby and put that into go-fast for your Z, and you'll be WAY faster than the suby was anyways. Guest 2fortyZ
thats the thing, my parents r the ones who r telling what i can and cant spend my money on. since there is practically nothing i can do to my car that already hasnt been done except for fatty engine swaps, my parents dont want me to spend anymore of my money on the car. my plan in the first place was to drop a 350 in it when i was in highschool, but once i got enough money my parents didnt want me to "throw it away" by putting a 350 in the Z. therefore i need to get a new car, and i really like the wrx's, and i live close to vishnu performance who build top of the line parts for subies, so i mean i cant really go wrong. its either a WRX or a Lancer EVO 8, and i dont really think i can afford the EVO 8.... we shall see... Mikelly
Honestly, I'd not go the WRX route due to the abnormal amount of tranny and clutch failures I've been hearing about on those AND the EVO8s... If you can't afford to go the STI route, I'd buy a Neon SRT, or something more reasonable and cheap like a civic or ford (What's the new little hatch back???). Do some research and you'll see what I'm talking about... Mike
Guest bastaad525
wow finally one other person who seems to hear the same stuff about the subies as I do... yeah now that you mention it it is usually tranny related problems I hear about them. Never really paid too much attention because I've never really been intrested in them myself, just noticed that we seem to get a lot of calls from stranded subies that get towed under dealership warranty/roadside or whatever. SRT-4's are sweet, faster than the Sube, handle just about as nice (forget what you think about the subie being all wheel drive... they don't handle nearly as well as you'd think they do) and are way cheaper. Still 2fortyz I dont get your reasoning... your parents wont allow you to swap an engine in the Z, therefore by default you HAVE to get rid of it??? What's so wrong with the way it is? Someone beat you in a street race or what? 240z's in as nice a shape as what you have are really hard to come by... I mean damn dude your Z is NICE... you'll hear this several times I'm sure, but if I had the $$$ I'd be all over it. I really would give more thought to just getting rid of it just to join the 'boy racer' crowd like that....
Guest 2fortyZ
its not that i got beat in a street race or anything like that. the reason i am getting rid of the car is that i need the money to help towards a downpayment. i am also annoyed with the fact that it gets shitty gas mileage, has no a/c, and is slow. im not about to dump 2 grand into the car to make it fast, decrees gas mileage even more, and put an a/c setup in it. the car is 30 years old, and i am trying to sell it for the fact that i need the money to help purchase a new car. my dad doesnt want me to get a used one because of warranty shit. If i could, i would keep the Z and buy another car, but that is not an option for me. im going off to college, i like the subies, i can get a vishnu stage 1 package for cheap and will put the car in the 13's. speaking of tranny problems...do u know if the people who have the subaru's who break down can drive worth a shit? cuz ive been mobbin my Z tranny and i do smash this thing, and the tranny has most likely 100,000+ miles on it because its a used junkyard tranny. it has not failed me yet (knock on wood) and all gears feel solid. how do u know that the kid was trying to launch the subie at like 5 k and just dropped the clutch and smoked it? kids r dumb, ill admit that, but i atleast know how to drive a stick real good compared to most people. anyways, im not trying to make this an argument or anything, i was just getting my point across, and im all stressed cuz of gay ass school. so dont take anything personal, i guess im just venting my stress through this post. but anyways, i dont really like the srt-4 just for the fact that its a gay neon, ya its fast, but its front wheel drive. I go snowboarding soo much in the winter, that is one of the main reasons why i want a subie. anyways, i seem to be rambling on about shit, so sorry if i seem pissed and what not in this post, and i do take all of ur guys opinions into account, and i thank you for ur replies. lata, kevin egli
Guest Phailure
As I understand, most subies have the notorious 'glass tranny'. Some claim that the early 90s legacy turbos had sturdier trannies but it still cant compare to say a t56. You can always just slip the clutch instead to help save the tranny anyway. The WRX is a nice car. Its fairly fast with the vishnu kit or the txs kit. Its fun to drive in the snow . Although... during the winter, the tranny doesnt like to go into gear alot when the car hasnt warmed up yet. Ofcourse, if I were going to buy a suby, itd have to be the early 90s turbo legacy.... those engines are supposed to be ridiculous.
Guest bastaad525
nice wishful thinking there dude... I dont think it has to do with whether they drive like crap or not, I think this is a problem that is just inherent to the current and recent sube's, maybe just WRX"s I dunno, but I'm tellin you, I work for a towtruck company, and I really can vouch that these things have SOME kind of reliability problem, that even '03-04 models get towed with some amount of regularity... they stand out in my mind better than most because you can ONLY tow the damn things with a flatbed, because of the all wheel drive, and they're always giving us a hard time. They are nice cars and yeah with vishnu this and stage one that yeah they'll be fast but what good is being fast when you're on the back of a tow truck? Z tranny's, on the other hand, are pretty well known to be sturdy, well built units that can take a lot of abuse... comparing them to the subie's trans is definatley an apples to oranges case. Also, I would think there's definately more stress on the subie's trans during hard launches because of the high level of grip... whereas a Z with good power will just spin the tires (unless you're running slicks, in which case Z's can start breaking parts as well...). Agreed you could ease up on the trans with clutch slipping, but then you'll be replacing the clutch a lot more often. If there's one thing i've seen on this board is that people often come here with their mind made up, but ask for oppinions like they are still trying to decide, when really what they seem to want is for people to say "oh yeah that is a good choice" and then get mad if people tell them anything other than that. It seems you have already made up your mind that you want a WRX. Sorry that a few of us are the type to warn of the possible major problems you may or may not encounter with that car... we just want you to be aware and hope that this info would help with your decision. In the end, they ARE good cars, really. Wouldn't be MY first choice, but hey, to each their own. You might not ever even have the problems we're talking about, and sincerely I hope, if you buy one, that you do not. I could preach all day long how Z's are the most reliable cars, you know... and I often do, but then again, since doing my turbo swap I've had nothing but problems, most of them major and expensive... just goes to show, that you just never know I hope you do get a good price for your car... as most people here would say or at least think, if I had the money, I'd buy it for sure Really hard for me to say a reasonable price, doing the Ebay that Tim240z suggested sounds like a good idea.
