LS1 Air Intake Questions

Recommended Posts

Got the air intake stuff from JTR . The air intake stuff looks to be great quality stuff.

I am trying to use the same setup as Joey did but there is a difference in the size of the hole that goes through the core support on the 240Z as compared to the 280Z. I want to run it to the passenger side where the in cabin cool air duct hooked up. The aluminum tube Joey used is 3 1/2 " but it will not fit through my core support as the hole is smaller.

I would like to use a reducer to allow a 3" piece of aluminum tube to go through the existing hole. Will reducing it to a 3" still provide enough air?

The plan is to have a K & N up front to a 3" 90 degree elbow to a 3" aluminum pipe that will pass through the core support to a 3" by 3.5" 90 degree elbow to a 3.5" piece of aluminum pipe to a coupling to the MAS to a 3.5" by 4" 90 degree elbow to the throttle body.

MAS280 did you have to enlarge the hole in your core support??

LS1's are very air sensitive. If you ask the same question on LS1tech.com they will cry like babies for you even suggesting it. That aside - how much is about 3-5 HP worth to you? Then again, depending on your exhaust it may make little to no difference.

Bill,

I am going to be using the same headers as you. Sanderson 1 1/2" primairies. As for 3-5 HP that is not too much. My goal was for 300+ RWHP and am sure I will easily achieve that. I just want to make sure that if the beginning part of the intake is 3 inches it will be enough. The stock air box seems smaller then that.

You should make the 300 rwhp ok with the 3" intake. Mine dyno'd at 311 with the restrictive exhaust and pulling the air from behind the radiator so, with a good exhaust and the colder air, yours should be fine.

Yeah! Kinda what I was thinking. Yours is the 98 motor right? Mine is the 02 with the ls6 style intake so it should at least have the power you are making. I would be happy with 311rwhp but somehow I think it will be a bit more if I use the same type exhaust as you and get the cold air from in front of the radiator.

Thanks!

David,

FWIW - when mine dyno'd at 311/326 it was with the restricted exhaust that combined the dual 2 1/2" pipes into a SINGLE 2 1/2" pipe right behind the transmission and then ran at a SINGLE 2 1/2" all the way back and over to the muffler - probably at least 6'.

The dual 2 1/2" all the way to the muffler set-up I have now should do better.

Also, my ECM had been 'tweaked' to the 01-02 specs so the only real difference, besides the exhaust, will be the LS6 intake manifold and the colder air inlet.

Cool! All this means more power for my combo. I plan to run the 2 1/2' duals to the muffler too. Speartewch is tweaking my computer too.

The 98 motor heads will now flow as good as the 02 heads. David I would use a 3.5" intake, I would not do a v8 swap and then try to take some of the power away from it. I had to enlarge the hole to fit the 3.5" intake.

I don't want to take away power. That is why I asked how restrictive it would be. If it is too much, I will enlarge the opening too. This will be easy to do and I already have the 3.5" tubing and other stuff. I just hated to cut into the car if I didn't have too. I guess it will never be going back to stock anyway.

Mike, you always seem to set me straight. Thanks for keeping me focused on the good stuff. You have been a great help on this project. All of you Hybrid Z members have.( Nice to know the heads flow better too!)

I ran the same intake set up as Mike.Run the 3.5 like it should be.You dont need to remove much materal and it just took me about 10 minutes to make it fit perfect.Nobody will ever know you cut it.I used a 3/8 fuel line and cut it length wise. Then put it around the hole so it wouldnt scratch up my intake.
