80LS1T
I was going to order the HOTCAM kit for my 93 LT1 and the description says "Does not include roller tappets. See valve lifter section for the lifter kit." So what does that mean? I am going to get new hydralic roller lifters too. Is that what Roller Tappets are? Thanks, Guy
Mike C
Yes, tappets are lifters. Tappet is the technical, official name, but they are know universally as lifters nowadays.
80LS1T
Yeah that's what I thought!!! Thanks Mike C! Guy
Mudge
Flat tappet/lifter guys swap (are supposed to) lifters when using a new cam, just like L6 guys and rockers. So old timers might wonder if they get lifters with the cam they are buying (which isn't needed nor is a break in procudure needed). R lifters are better than stock, I sure dont know pump up information on the stock lifters versus R lifters, but I got R anyway for RPM and extended duty. 80LS1T
So where is a good place to get R lifters? I know of a website that sells them for $199 but they are on backorder. Guy
Mike C
The GM roller lifters can be had from any GM Performance Parts dealer, I think they are $169 a set. Summit has Comp lifters for the factory roller cams for $199 a set last time I looked.
80LS1T
Hey Mike C or anybody else for that matter would you happen to know the GM part number for those? I found some Hyraulic roller lifters by GM but they are 30.52 a piece which comes out to $488.32 for 16 of them. I am not spending $488 on lifters! Please help!!! 80LS1T
Oh yeah and heres another question...what kind of rods do I have in my 93 LT1 motor right now(stock)? If they are the PM rods I was going to recondtion them and use ARP bolts. If not I guess I will just have to spend the extra $250 on rods. Thanks, Guy
Mike kZ
I maybe wrong, but I thought you can re-use roller lifters(your stock rollers) on a new cam. As long as they are in good shape. The roller tips do not wear the cam.
80LS1T
Well the engine has 103,000 miles on it so I just figured that I should replace them "while I'm in there" Guy
Mike C
The lifters should be fine with only 103k on them. 12551705 is the part # for the ZZ4 lifters which I THINK are the same as LT1 lifters, but you should check. Jim Pace has them for $234.80, but I haven't priced them in a while, so that may be the new rate. Jegs sells GM Performance parts as well. I'm not sure that the PM rods can be reconditioned. Anybody? The caps are "cracked" when the rod is made. Literally broken apart, and then the ridges and valleys fit back together. I don't know that the mating surfaces can be ground smooth and then resized. Check with your machine shop. You may just want to use rods as-is, just replace the rod bolt nuts. EDIT: Scoggin Dickey,http://www.SDPC2000.com has the lifter kit for $199. 80LS1T
But I do have the PM rods in my stock engine right now right? The reason I said I was going to recondition them is because I saw some on ebay that said they were reconditioned and fitted with ARP bolts. Should I do anything else to them besides use ARP bolts? Mike C
If you are not running over 6500 rpm, I would just replace the nuts when you reassemble the motor. If you are going to be running high RPM a lot, you should buy aftermarket rods and at that point I would go 6" as well. But then since you have to buy pistons and rods, might as well go for the 3.75" stroke crank... See where this gets you, don't ya'? (Deeper and deeper in debt!) Also, Scoggin Dickey has the COMP roller lifters for factory roller equipped motors for $179. And they have a part # HT-2148 OEM replacement '87 and up roller lifter for $7.50 each whether that's right or not I don't know...
80LS1T
No I wont be running over 6500 rpms too often. So I guess I will just replace the bolts. Do I have to balance them out or anything like that? Guy
Mike C
Just the NUTS, not the bolts. Replacing the bolts can distort the bore of the rod. The bolts can be re-used, but the nuts cannot. (Should not at least, but it is done.) Hopefully someone else will pipe-in on the feasability of rebuilding the PM rods. Darn new-fangled stuf... Mudge
Dude, buy R lifters $200, if you want standard quality lifters you can get them for $180 or so, not much difference in price.
80LS1T
Ok but where can I get them? Guy
Mudge
Calling COMP CAMS directly, http://www.thunderracing.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=subcategory&subcategoryid=1107#T1563 or www.racenet.net Some people have bad experiences with Racenet (folded headgaskets to save space, wrong locators sent, I've heard alot), so I'd not use them, call Comp if Thunder is back ordered. 80LS1T
I called Thunderracing yesterday and the guy that I talked to said that those are on backorder and he doesnt even know if they are ever going to get them in again!? So if I want them I will have to call COMP CAMS I guess. Guy
Mudge
Eesh, that sucks. I may know someone that'll have them if Comp isn't making them currently (production runs have varying times). Anyway, these are called anti-pump up lifters, so for $10-$20 more than regular lifters, I figure it was worth it for me Hope you can get em.
