evildky
or whatever you call the things, i collapsed 2 of them yesterday, and they are not cheap ! best price I have found yet is $66 each, anyone have a better price? can i get away with replacing the 2 bad ones or do I really need to replace all 12? Guest 2slo4u
That's about the same price I found a couple of years ago. You might just want to get a non-hydraulic 81 turbo head. (p90) On my previous 83 turbo, the lifters started to go bad one after the other. I had a high volume oil pump from motorsport and excellent oil pressure. It didn't help. I've heard of guys cleaning them on this website, but I tried to clean every one that started clacking and it never helped. Maybe I just didn't do it correctly. The 81turbo head turned out to be a LOT cheaper and I didn't have to worry about hydraulic lifters clacking or collapsing.
cygnusx1
Sorry I don't have a source for the hydraulics but I do have a question about them failing. What causes them to fail, when can I expect mine to fail and what can I do to prevent them from failing? I hate waiting for the inevitable to happen....I never even worried about it but now that you posted, murphy's law says that mine will fail within the next few months. evildky
I remember a local club member having one or 2 that would fail intermitantly and he wasn't sure which ones were bad, when mine failed yesterday I thought I had tossed a follower, pulled the cover and everything looked good, then I thought about the lifters, and I pushed each lightly with a screw driver and 2 of them were obviously bad and were spongy, I went ahead and ran my car (this all happenedon my first pass at an autocross) the other 4 runs were noisy but the car ran ok, I took my trophy and loaded the car, when I got home last night and started the car to unload it, it was all quiet again !? everything sounds fine ...for now, is this the way they normally go out? acting up intermitantly? evildky
and oh yeah, I like having quiet lifers that never need adjusting, that was wone of the perks of the turbo swap
Guest 2slo4u
You can't hear my rockers at all...with the hood closed. When it is open, they sound about like the injectors.
cygnusx1
Oh yeah, no question, I love the hydraulies. Super quiet and no fuss. I just don't like hearing stuff like, "When they fail what do we do???" with no real answers. I would hate to have to give up the P90A just because a lifter cant get hard anymore. So what can be done to keep the P90A's alive and kicking without spendig a small fortune?
Guest 2slo4u
Maybe the lifters could use some Viagra. Just kidding. It would be nice to have a head with 12 new lifters but the ones I priced at 63.50apiece a couple of years ago added up to way too much $ to worry about a little more noise and a little more maintenance. There is a thread or two on Hybridz that discusses how to clean them and prime them before replacing. I had tried the same method of disassembling them, cleaning and priming and reinstalling. Just couldn't get them to work any better. Maybe someone knows how to get a "rebuild" kit with new ball and spring for these? 81zxturbo 95slobaru
D83ZXT
Some people forget to do while rebuilding them... 8. Once all your parts are cleaned start putting them back together, first the spring into the lifter body, then the check valve. 9. Hold the lifter upside down and push on the check valve 5-10 times to get any remaining diesel fuel or carb cleaner out of it. 10. Submerge the lifter in NEW OIL so that you can push the check valve open and closed from directly above (right side up). Push on the check valve 5-10 times to remove all the air and to be sure it is full of oil. Remove the lifter from the oil, but keep it over the container so you don't spill oil everywhere. Place the plunger into the lifter body and make sure you cannot push the plunger down by hand, if the plunger moves then repeat the process (If you can still move the pluger after a few re-tries then your check valve assembly is shot and will need to be replaced). Replace the little metal cover. In order to get the cover to snap into place you will need to compress the lifter 1mm or so. This will allow you the needed clearance to easily snap the cover into place. I used a very large C-clamp. 11. Reassemble in reverse order, REMEMBER to KEEP ALL ROCKERS TO THERE RESPECTIV POSITION AS WHEN YOU REMOVED THEM. Well there you go you are now done and can enjoy once again a very quiet motor =)

This used to happen to just about every 300ZX I ever saw at an autox, and just about every KA24'd car too. I think you probably just sucked air for a second around a turn. Once this happens it takes quite a while for the lifter to pump up again, and makes a hell of a racket too. There was a previous discussion about why and if hyd lifters were crappy maybe a year or more back, and I brought this VG and KA thing up and IIRC an extra quart of oil was the quick fix. I'd put another quart of oil in and see if it happens again at the next event, and consider a baffled pan from Nissan Comp or AZC as a fix.
