Harmonic balancer question

The 383 that I have was already assembled when I bought it. It has already been balanced.

Now the problem, The engine has a stock gm harmonic balancer on it. I want to change to an sfi approved balancer, possibly a fluid dampener.

 

Are the balancers typically weighted differently? Could I take the balancers to a machine shop and have them balanced to match? Or, will I have to have the entire rotating assembly rebalanced?

 

I`ve never had this dilema before. I`ve always taken everything to the shop and picked it up when it was done.

I would rather be safe than sorry.

The engine was assembled by one of the most reputable shops in the area, so my concerns otherwise are minimal. I just didn`t want to tear the whole thing down if I didn`t have to. :(

 

As it sits, all it needs to run is a the carb and distributor.
