Chevy V-8 280Z

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, for a while now i have been wanting to do some kind of engine swap with my 280, and i just bought a JTR manual, and i have some questions.

Has anyone supercharged or turbocharged their V-8z?

What about Carbureted V-8's? i know Vortech makes a kit for carb V-8's, anyone have it?

What, in you're opinion is the best car to take the V-8 from?

Did you guys havto change rear ends? and what transmissions do you find best?

Do the JTR parts work with ls1's?

Thanks alot guys.

Are you asking about any car in general, or 240's and 280's?

I am going to assume that you meant a Z, so a 280 because its stiffer.

REAL Helpful people are plenty in this forum. Break down your questions and ask them in different sections(drivetrain, engine, turbo charger, etc), simple questions get answered faster. Personally I am not knowledgable enough to answer your questions, but I am getting a V8 Z in a few weeks.

Archive/search offers a lot of good reads, you learn from unexpected threads, but they just don't answer questions when you need it.

Thanks.

One last thing. I have a sweet deal on an LT1 with Ecu, harness, 6spd trans for $1100 CAD, good deal? also, has anyone done an LT1 swap going by the JTR book? i asked Mike from JTR and he said they sell mounts that would work. I just want to know if i can do an Lt1 swap while going by the JTR book.

Is the LT1 A longblock or shortblock?
 hehe...Im sorry I had to laugh at this one. No disrespect intended.

*A long block is an engine with the block, rotating assembley(pistons, cranks, rods, cam), plus the heads and valve train.

*A short block is a engine with just the block and rotating assembley

*A "turn key" motor is everything from oil pan to intake and carb if it has one.

Sensors' date=' AFM, doesent say anything else about an Alternator, but ill call.

Is the LT1 A longblock or shortblock? im new to big muscle car engines, so can someone fill me in? thanks.[/quote']

i think he is referring to smallblock/bigblock.

a bigblock motor will have 4 evenly spaced exhaust ports on eachbank. On a smallblock, the center ports are right becide each other. the lt1 is a standard 350 smallblock(with a few upgrades)

THE LT1 IS A GEN II CHEVY SMALL BLOCK WITH A REVERSE COOLANT FLOW. IT ALSO HAS OPTICRAP....ER I MEAN OPTISPARK IGNITION, AND D PORT HEADS. THERE ARE A FEW OTHER THINGS THAT DIFFER BETWEEN GEN I AND GEN II SMALL BLOCKS.

LOOKING AT EXHAUST PORTS IS NOT THE IDEAL WAY TO TELL IF ITS A SMALL OR BIG BLOCK, BECAUSE WITH THE NEW GEN III MOTORS THEIR HEADS HAVE BIG BLOCK STYLE PORTS.

Thanks for all the help, so my plan so far is to get my hands on a carbureted, 4 bolt main 350. Ill do a rebuild, balance it, new carb, port the head and some other things. One thing, i could put up with an automatic trans, but is their any popular 5spd options with an older 350?

oh and can anyone recommend where i get a good rear end for my application? (as in what kind of car from)

If you decide to go with a 5-speed, you probably want a "World Class" T5. Search for T5 and you will find a lot of information about which ones to use, how to determine which T5 you have, what car's had T5 transmissions, etc.

As far as the rearend goes I'd stick with the stock R200 you have in your 280Z. The differential is strong enough to handle the power of your engine unless you plan on getting really wild with it. The weak points are the universal joints in the half-shafts. You can replace the half-shafts with CV joint axles from a 300ZX Turbo or a 280ZX Turbo using adapters made by Modern Motorsports.

How much power are you planning on making and what are you planning on doing with the car, drag, autox, road racing, street?

If you plan on getting really wild with HP and want to drag race then you might consider a solid axle rearend like a Ford 9 inch or Chevy 12-bolt.

A better answer to your LT1 question earlier would be that the JTR engine and tranny mounts work perfectly with the LT1 but the electronics are dfferent so that part of the manual is not much help. The LT1 is basically a small block chevy with improved cooling, Multi-point EFI and a questionable advanced ignition system.

Hope this helps.
