ZTR
i was looking at crate motors on sdpc2000.com an i saw a 345hp 6.0L Gen III Escalade Crate Engine. the only thing i can see wrong with using it for a swap is it's a cast iron block so i would think it heavy. but i dont know give me your thoughts. Guest DiZeased_240
It shouldn't be any heavier than any other small block V8 cast iron block that someone is putting in a Z. Is there some reason you are interested in that motor versus one of the other crate engines available? If you just want the Cadillac engine for something different you might look at the 4.6L Northstar. It has 320 horsepower @ 6400 RPM and 310 lb-ft of torque @ 4400 RPM. It is $500 more but you also will be a little lighter because it has an aluminum block.
ZTR
no,,,, i dont care if it a Cadillac engine. i have been looking gen3 builds in car craft and they seem it build good power for pretty cheap if you know of another gen3 motor i would like to hear some ideas
Guest Aaron
You might want to look for a 6.0L Gen III from a 3/4 or bigger Chevy or GMC Truck. I believe they are the same as the Escalade motors, and you may can get a complete truck to grab the harness and computer from.
Pop N Wood
A recent Hot Rod (I think) magazine had a guide to LS engines and the escalade motor is suppose to have LS6 like heads. I think this is different from the regular 6L truck engines. I will look at the article again once I get home. The magazine also detailed an LS crate engine install. The crate package came with a computer especially set up for non-stock installations. Good read. The Northstar has been talked about quite often. Expensive to work on and doesn't have the aftermarket support of the LS engines.
maichor
LS1 if you are ready to build now. But, since you are looking at crate motors and more$ for them, just start looking around for the LS2. You can get the larger displacement you are after. You may have to wait a while to pick up an LS2 crate motor. I would drop in a used (read cheaper) LS1, drive it couple years and then pick up LS2 short block. I can't wait to see the real numbers for the output on the C6 Z06 version of the LS motor. By the way, the '01 and '02 LS1 can be rebuilt once without resleeving. If you have one of those, you could do a lunati stroker kit and still be about the same price wise. However, if you have someone build a stroker for you look for big$ on an LS1 $10-15K. So, I still say LS1. If you want, add a 100 shot for $500 and you are still under budget.
ZTR
i have seen ls2 blocks for sale but nothing else. the 6.0l was just a idea i think it would be would be a nice motor. i think????

chopstic
i was also looking into the gen III 6.0l, looks like a nice crate engine for less price than the ls1. Claims to only be like 65lbs heavier than an ls1 which still makes it a pretty light engine. it doesn't look like it comes with any of the electronics, how much would you guys estimate it would cost to aquire the electronics to get this thing running?? Pop N Wood
The December issue of Car Craft has half the issue devoted to LS engines. They dyno a $6200 LS1 crate engine, complete with ECU, that made 402 HP out of the box. Only needed a half dozen items to complete the engine (they gave the part numbers). They also have charts detailing exactly what head came on each engine. The Escalades have an LQ9 engine whose head is based on the LS6 head. Said these heads work better for blown applications. They also detail a stroker kit that put displacement at 402 Cubes and made (I think) 580 HP. Very expensive though.
Guest ALL UC2
the aluminum headed escalade motor would be a great choice. it has the same heads as a ls6/ls2 except has bigger combustion chambers. throw a bigger cam and valve springs in it the i would say you would be pushing 400 hp to the wheels. i have seen dyno charts on the 5.3 truck motors where they put a cam and headers on the motor, nothing else, and gained 103 hp over stock. WITH JUST A CAM AND HEADERS!!!
