Poundz9oh9
I was told that with the roller cam setup I've got in my engine that I should be looking at getting one of those composite gears for the distributer as opposed to the brass type because of the durability. Is there any truth to this? I don't want to drop $100 if I don't need to, it can go other places. But if I have to I can. Any advice is appreciated. TIA!! Jolane
I am not sure what cam you have, but my experience tells me that it doesn't really matter that you have a roller cam. The issue is materials, whether the cam is steel or iron. I have a Comp Cams Hydraulic Roller in my 383, and when I call ed Comp Cams about what distributor gear to use, the tech guy said that I should use a cast iron distributor gear, such as those supplied on the Holley and MSD distributors. I chose MSD... Call the cam manufacturer and ask your question, they are the best people to ask... after all, they made the cam... I hope this helps, Joshua BTW, I received differing answers when I called MSD and Holley, although both have a Cast Iron gear...
dr_hunt
I don't know, I've always used brass, but they don't last very long. When you find out if the composite will work and lasts longer, let us know.
Poundz9oh9
Well the cam I have is steel. And I was told that the steel cams were a lot harder on the dist. gear so the brass would have to be changed annually or so. I think I'll just get the composite and post the wear characteristics after about a year or so......
Corzette
Hey Pound, definately go with the Polymer Gear. I have a steel Roller as well and it ate my stock gear to shreds in about 3 to 4 days. I have had the Polymer gear on there now for almost two years with little or no wear. A GREAT investment. Not to mention possibly saving your engine. Youll freak when you first feel it. It looks and feels like PLASTIC. Doesnt make any sense how it works but it does.... Terry
