Guest kc6wfs
Darn peicemeal computer I've been using for YEARS now died. Was a PIII 500mhz 512 ram 40 gig 2x burner, zip, ect. not sure what happened to it but it's eather bios, main board or HD. HD was fairly new but just loaded 30 gigs of video, was working on a family video for our daughters growing up over the years. Well looking at getting a killer laptop instead of a box computer. Any of you guys ONLY have a laptop and use it for everything?????? PS.. Ross, now I have no idea on the spring rates I emailed you. Can you send it back to me??? Also I have no one elses email. Please email me at kc6wfs@pacbell.net At least my daughter has a kick ass "E-Machine" computer... 800mhz!!!! Thanks.. Just venting... What happened? do you get any video? Any beeps? Does the system show anything, crap out anywhere? Just no power at all? give me more clues, maybe I can help. Or shoot me an email aux@highrpm.org, i'll give you my # to call if you need me to help you out (not picking on skills, just offering help )

denny411
I personally could not use a lap top as my only pc. maybe in a pinch, but I have gotten so used to the bigger screen that it drives me nuts when I`m up north and have to use someone elses that only has a 15" monitor. Mine is only 17" but thats pretty big compared to a 15". A lap top would drive me insane,it also drives me crazy to have to go back to dial up when using somone elses pc. My .02 anyway
pparaska
It's easy to hook a full size keyboard, mouse and monitor to a laptop - problem solved! Then when you want to program your stand-alone ECM in your car, you can just shut down, unhook from that stuff and go to the car with it! I also want a laptop next, with Svideo input, etc. to be able to download stuff off of my digital video cam and edit it, etc. Any ideas on how to do this cheaply appreciated! Tim240z
IMHO, I wouldn't use a laptop as my primary/only machine. Unless you ahve a full docking station (not just a port replicator), it is difficult/inconvenient to hook up a bunch of peripherals to it. Not impossible though. Also I've found them (in my time as a tech support)to be much less reliable than a desktop and the desktops are more upgradeable. My advise (FWIW) is to get a zoomy desktop with all the goodies, and get a used el cheepo laptop (Pentium II laptops can be had now for pennies) for auto tuning. I plan to (when I start tuning my LT1 PCM) to re-image my laptop with the bare minimum software, just to be sure that nothing conflicts with the tuner software and nothing unecessary is bogging the memory. JMHO. Tim BTW Dave...I have a IBM PII 400 mhz desktop with Win2000 loaded on it if you need something quick. Tim
Drax240z
Laptops can really suck the money, and if you are doing video editing I'd suggest getting a powerful desktop. I'm running: -Athlon XP1700+ (overclocked and water cooled to 1.73GHz) -512MB DDR RAM -Geforce4 MX440 64MB DDR Video Card -80.0Gb Maxtor HDD -19" Viewsonic Monitor Of course other stuff too. But this whole setup with finding the used monitor probably ran me around $700CAN or ~$450US. My advice is to look into a good upgrade for your current system, and reuse a few parts. (floppies, CD-ROM's, etc) Oh yeah, I'd highly recommend looking into Athlon processors too. I was an Intel freak for years, but I've been completely happy with this processor and I saved a bundle. PS: Refrigeration system is in the works for the processor.
Guest SuperDave
Over the 20-odd years I've been in the computer business, I've owned many laptops. However, it wasn't until this summer that I finally went to a lappy (a Fujitsu Lifebook, for the record) as my primary box. It was also my first Intel product since the Pentium II era. Of course, I still have a stable of Thunderbirds but the laptop sees the most use. Pete, although most laptops have s-video out, few have such for input; you'll be going the IEEE 1394 (Firewire) route if your camera supports it (most digicams do). Most current laptops have onboard 1394 ports. I'm hesitant to plug my usual hangout here for fear of being perceived improperly, but if you want to know anything about computer hardware or software, there's only one forum you'll need: the Ars Technica Open Forum
Guest kc6wfs
Hi AUX and all, It makes no beeps but the HD light lights up, no vid sync or flash, PS fan runs, CPU fan runs, Graphics card fan runs. It does not even want to try to boot, CMOS/BIOS reset did nothing. I took it to the puder doctor... At least I have 2 other computers networked in our house... Drax240z
If you have more than one ram chip, try pulling them out one at a time, boot up and see if that fixes your problem. I had similar symptoms with a blown SIMM. (yes, back in the SIMM days)
pparaska
Dave, sorry I stole your thread - guys thanks for the responses to my question. Dave, I had a flakey mother board the died much like that years ago. MB's aren't too expensive, and you can upgrade the machine pretty cheaply and get lots of kick for the $$$. At least the new 40G HD is fine and will load it on the new computer. I had also just bought a 64Mb accel card for it also. Gerrrr.. Well at least I have my daughters computer.
