Guest PBGreg21
I am planning on doing a full rebuild on my engine. While I am in there replacing the timing chain and all that crap I want to put in a performance cam and get the head ported and polished. I have two questions 1) Can I use my P79 head on the N47 block with the dished pistons? 2) I have an engine out of a 1980 ZX in my car right now so I am going to need to buy the engine overhual kit from MSA for the '80 ZX. Will that cause any trouble when putting on the P79? One more thing, if anyone has bought the engine overhual kit from MSA can you tell me what all is included in it? Thanks a lot guys. 240Z_Master
I really don't think you need to buy anything from MSA if you can buy it somewhere else.
2126
I really don't think you need to buy anything from MSA if you can buy it somewhere else. PBGreg21, I think what 240Z_Master is saying is, MSA tends to have high prices on alot of their items that with a little searching can be purchased for less from other vendors. In defense of MSA (business wise anyway), when a company carries items in stock that are generally considered low volume movers it cost the company to have them sit on their shelves. The benifit to a customer is that he doesn't have to do the leg work to find said product and it is available right now. Heres my favorite example....Item in question, the Mallory UniLite distributor. From MSA you will now pay about $600.00 for this baby. I thought this was a bit high so I did a little research (this is the leg work I was talking about) and aquired the correct part number for the distributor, then called Summit Racing with a request for price and availability. Summit's price was about $375.00 (way better price) but I had to wait a week or two before I received it. So, if you are not the inquisitive type and don't mind the extra cost, MSA is a good supplier! Just my $0.
Guest PBGreg21
Thanks for the advice, I still need the technical questions answered so I can determine which parts I need.
cheftrd
It's been about 15 years since I've worked on an L engine, but if I remember correctly, the P90 had a flat top piston and a large chamber, while the N47 had a dish piston with a smaller chamber. When L's were available in Japan "back in the day" we used to use the P90 head on the stock N47 block for a cheap turbo engine. It will lower the CR significantly, but I don't think there were any problems; remove one, replace with the other.
fl327
I would just put the n47 engine together with whatever head it came with if you are not going to turbo the engine, the lower compression will make for a sluggish NA car. There are a few resources online that will beat MSAs prices by a lot.
Guest PBGreg21
Thanks, I just got the stage III cam kit from MSA lastnight because it was the only one that I could find that was complete. I will just put it on the N47 head as it is the easiest. I also got a new timing chain and gears and a full gasket set. Port and polish will also be done while the head is out. Thanks for all the help.
