They jacked up the rear of the z with a forklift and build a frame to hold the hotwheels car on the Z's tire, put tape on the tire to smooth it out then put it in gear and saw how fast they could spin the wheels of the hotwheels before they fell off. They hit ~75 and the car bounced away.

they butted the car up against a wall, raised the rear end off the ground with a fork lift, put duck tape on the threads of the tire (to give a smooth surface), held the car on top of the tire, and gradually accellerated the tire. The Hot wheel flew off the tire at around 70 MPH.

The myth was that a hot wheels type car rolling down a hill would outrun a car. I think they said the myth came from a comercial back in the 70's. The test with Z was to see if the wheels could take the speed they estimated it would have to travel. They also did wind tunnel tests on the cars. I was working and did not get to watch the whole episode, so I don't know how it came out. I know they were having trouble with their plastic track they were trying to use. The 1320 foot track was expanding in the heat of the day and buckling up.

They took the fastest hot wheels they tested and raced them against a Dodge Viper on a hill somewhere around Lake Tahoe. The myth was that a toy car could beat a full size car using just gravity. They tried to setup a quarter mile, but they couldn't get the track for the hot wheels to lay flat, so they cut it down to 400 feet. The hot wheel car started out quicker, but the Viper caught up and won all the races.

In the end they used a 400 foot track and rolled the car down a hill with a viper as the competition, the hot wheels car lost by a few seconds but the car that Jamie build beat the Viper in the 100 foot race but lost in the 400.

Originally they were going to try quarter mile times, but it was to hot and the track buckled, but they did have a 1/4 mile of hot wheels track lain which is awesome.

..beaten to the punch, but Two accounts to confirm accuracy

Yup cool episode, The 280z with the 160 mph speedo. it seemed like they wen't through a lot of trouble using a car instead of something else for example likes the girl said the grinder

Shoot. Any high school physics weenie could prove that mathematically;

distance = 1/2 * (Acceleration) * (Time Squared)

The fastest the car could accelerate is 1 G, with no friction of any kind.

So the quarter mile time is

time = sqrt( 2 * (5280 feet/4) / 32 ft/s^2)) = 9.08 seconds

To run that time the trap speed would have to be 198 MPH!!!

Not exactly competitive in pro stock.

Add a little friction and cap the top speed due to wind resistance and Scottie could easily take it.
