Mikelly
Guys I'm doing research on the whole TB adapter/ air filter plumbing issue for both Jim's and My motor projects... We're both running 1000CFM Tbs and the plan was to go with something like this plenum adapter: http://www.knfilters.com/Racing/plenum.htm Problem is this puppy filters ONLY about 45 sq. inches and We need something in the range of 120 Sq inches of filter surface... Anyone have suggestions for this... Will use tubing to plumb the air from in front of the radiator outside of the engine bay... We don't really want to hang a regular carburetor air filter setup on the TB, hiding the FI... I thought Tim or someone sent me a link a long time ago to an alternate solution out there... Tim240z
Mike, In the back of just about every Hot Rod mag is an ad for a twin snorkle air filter housing, but it is designed for Carbys, so I don't know if it will work for your application. Sorry, don't remember the name of it.......You could always fab your own out of fiberglass a' la Terry O. Tim EDIT: Here it is, I googled it: http://www.ramairbox.com
Mikelly
Yea Tim, That was what I used on my previous setup, and may again since the Sq Inch requirement for filter material is so high... I was hoping for something a little cleaner though! Mike
Guest Aaron
Perhaps you could use that plenum adapter (or the mini plenum) without a filter, then plumb it to a filter housing in elsewhere to run a larger filter.
Psykovertible
this was my thought as well. leave the filter out and run a cone filter up front.
Mikelly
If you guys are refering to the unit on the K&N website, you can't use it. I called them and according to K&N, the plenum doesn't move enough air for anything larger than the cubic inches it is rated for...and THAT is the problem. Although I'm as confused as everyone else, because my Vette has a plenum size that is somewhere close to 80-90mm and I don't get the sense that the diameter is restricting me much on the vette. Dudeboy
Mikelly, Have you taking a look at: http://www.superiorairflow.com/extreme_velocity.htm I have been looking at there site for awhile nice stuff. I only know one person utilizing there plenum on a 454 Nova with carb/injection and he indicated he has now air flow restriction from what he can measure. Mikelly
Dudeboy, I'll let you know how they work out because we're getting TWO... One for my project and one for JIm's. THanks for the info! Mike

Guest zfan
That is an awsome set up, problem is they say it sits 5" high. Do we have 5" of room under the hood. I am looking at mating one to my 750 double pumper and 5" is really pushing my luck. Has anyone used the ramair box set up? I might just buy one to get cool air to my carb. Under hood temps are killing me. Mike
Mikelly
I used the ramairbox on my previous setup in the white flared Zcar. It worked well... I just wanted to uncover the motor.. We're trying one of the Extreme units on JIm's car and if it works out, I'll be ordering one myself... If you go the Ramairbox route, use the 110 degree unit, and plumb it out both sides, and use the largest drop on the bottom of the unit you can get. Mikelly
We just did a test fit of the extreme unit, which is really sweet looking BTW, and here's the deal... On Jim's car, using the provided crossmember spacers, and using the NEW HOLLEY MPFI intake (Comes with the Commander 950 setup as pictured in Summit and Jegs and can be seen in my pics on my yahoo link) the top hit the hood with the spacer provided by the engine builder. We swapped to a thinner, standard carb spacer and BINGO, no interferance... I didn't have my camera with me... But I did takle a few measurements... The Holley intake "rise" on the single plane setup is 1.5 inches to the top from the base of the plane... My Cutler is about 1/4-1/2 inch shorter, which means even more clearance... I'll be ordering mine this coming week! If I get a chance, I'll snap some pics of Jim's setup, or post my own as soon as it comes in. Mike
Dudeboy
The car guys in the neighborhood drool over Barry's set-up (owns the 454 Nova). He's made a few more tweaks to the 454, so he will be going on the chasis Dyno again this weekend. So, I am interested know how it flows before/after for your car and Jim McNemars. jt1
How much do those things flow? Enough to feed the 383 without restriction? John
Mikelly
John, based on discussions with the guy who sells them, and based on looking at my own setups on the Vette and other SBC FI setups, I do believe they will flow enough. That unit is being used on some large displacement Chevies making HUGE numbers... Mike
