BleachZee
I don't know if my way is the best but this is what I do. If you plan to paint it, I use Gunk engine degreaser and a wire brush to clean it. Then a diffrent nylon brush with car soap. Then finish with lots of brake cleaner. The brake cleaner cleans out all the degreaser and then self-drys. Just paint on that. If you're just looking to clean them while on the car, only use brake cleaner.

zcarnut
thanks man! do i need to worry about getting the liquids on the seals and the pistons while the brake caliper is uninstalled?... A lot of cleaning fluids will expand the rubber piston seals and will seize the pistons in their bores. Clean the calipers _after_ disassembly and install new seals.
