Z31 rotors + Z32 Callipers = my stupid idea!

Recommended Posts

ok pretty much covered in the topic, I got a set of 84-85 Z31 vented rotors, and a set of 90 Z32 N/A calipers (90 used the 26mm 4 pots) and I plan on mating them to an S30 spindle assy, and fit them inside my 15" wheels, anyone ever tried something this wierd? I've of course searched and read up on all sorts of Z31 or Z32 swaps but never this combo, and if it works out I'd think it'll be some wicked stopping power, so of course I have to make a spacer ring for the rotor and an adapter plate for the Calliper the lines look like they might just fit I'll find out tomorrow I guess, any words of wisdom? kinda getting off the beaten path and hoping this works

I am curious what you want to use this set up for: street, auto-x, drag, road racing? I am not sure about the spacing issues for a 15 inch wheel, but I think it would probably work fine. I've seen/done the Toyota 4x4 calipers under a 15 in wheel with the Z31 rotors with no fitting issues. I talked to a few of my buddies that race and have used the Z32 calipers and the consensus was they loved them for the street but hated them on the track because they didn't like the feel or lack there of for modulation. This really isn't an issue of the rotor and calipers but more of the master cylinder (most use the 280zx master) and a proporting valve. No one I have come across seems to have a master for this application that gives them the feel they like. That does not mean their isn't one out there, just means I don't know of an ideal one for this application.

My 280zx has been undergoing the transformation to front Z32 turbo disks (wider than the NA) with the matching caliper. It will fit in 15 wheels but it is a bit of a pain to make it fit next to the strut and alighn the caliper correctly. there was a bit of fabriaction that took place.

As for the feel of it I cant really say yet as I haven treally given it a good going over :-D . But should be able to give an opinion in a week or so.

One concern is that the Z31 rotor is only 22mm thick whereas the Z32 1990 caliper is designed for a 26mm thick rotor. The pistons may protrude enough where the seal is exposed or enough to result in the pistons becoming cocked in their bores. This may not happen with a unworn rotor and new pads, but the possibility of occurrence with a worn pads and a worn rotor (min thickness of the Z31 rotor before discarding is 20mm) should be investigated.

Since you will be making a custom spacer anyway for a vented rotor I would recommend going to a thicker rotor than the 22mm Z31 ones. This would be a performance benefit and would allow better potential from the Z32 calipers.

There are plenty of thicker 5-bolt rotors available, but if you wish to remain with 4-bolt wheels then the only thicker 4-bolt rotor is the one off the Saab 900.
