patzky1
Did anybody hear about these dummies entering the Whitehouse airspace and causing a Code Red condition? They got within 3 miles of the building. Being an instructor, I cannot believe they did it! They even ignored repeated attempts to communicate with them via radio. Eventually F16's intercepted and they landed nearby in MD. What's scary is that they probably didn't realize what they were doing and COULD have been shot down. Geesh. Pat
Mike kZ
Ya, I heard about that. What a couple of morons!!
patzky1
Well, they apparently were leaving from Smoketown airport, around 100 miles northeast of the Whitehouse, and heading to an NC airshow. This puts their direct flightpath right over the Whitehouse ADIZ (bad bad bad to fly there w/o permission) and surely they had to have some inkling of what they were doing, as they did not start off too far from it. I know it's easy to enter airspaces inadvertantly, but you have to know about and avoid THAT one, it's huge. Pat
2126
I've got an interesting idea to resolve this type of issue! Install a PHALANX systems on top of the White House and leave it active 24/7.....problem solved. Sure, there will be some idiot that gets shot down because he is an idiot and the passivists will cry foul, inhumane, morally wrong, etc., etc., but quess what....the idiot didn't crash into the White House. Maybe then people may begin to think before doing!!! Most days I feel like I'm surrounded by walking illiterates (just stupid clueless people). randy 77zt
beavis & butthead do airplanes-maybe they twisted up a fatty while they were flying.
johnc
The F16s couldn't escort them because of the speed difference, they were just trying to get the pilot's attention. It took three very close passes by two different F16s dropping flares in front of the Cessna to get the pilots to realize something was up. A Customs UH60 helicopter then met up with them and directed the plane to a landing. I've ridden in a C150 and a bird flying close by gets your attention. I don't know how they could possibly miss one F16 dropping flares passing in front of their plane, let alone three.
johnc
Install a PHALANX systems on top of the White House and leave it active 24/7.....problem solved. I'm thinking there are a number of various anti-aircraft "systems" all around Washington DC. And Phalanx is not a system I would trust after talking with one of the GD test engineers who certified the system way back when. It failed 500+ tests in a row and when it finally worked on the 5xx test they certified the system without any further tests. Then the Iraqi's put an air to surface missle into on of our frigates while the Phalanx system as supposed to be protecting the ship. Pop N Wood
Phalanx is a short range, terminal defense weapon. It is also obsolete and being removed from ships. The one on the Stark was turned off at the time of the exocet strike, so not really the weapon systems fault. The white house staff does have sholder fired Stingers. But a PAC3 missile battery would be cool. Now that would do some damage.
