drove the 37 TPI setup with MSnS_Extra

Man does it run good. I am impressed. Starts fast, idles really smooth. Throttle response and acceleration are amazing. This is regular old sbc with an 87 TPI setup on it and mild performance build. MSnS_Extra controlling fuel and spark through original small cap TPI distributor with 8 pin HEI module.

Thinking about putting TPI in your z? Go for it and throw away the GM ECU so you can use MSnS_Extra.

It broke down something like this:

87 TPI -- $300 (with distributor/coil/fuel rails/harness/etc)

megasquirt -- $180

TPI air filter -- $30

EFI fuel pump -- $100

Around $600 depending on what the TPI setup will cost you.

Seems like I am forgetting something. Ask if there is something obvious missing from that list. We hacked up the harness to re-use it with megasquirt.

A couple side notes, we had to machine the four center bolts because 87 TPI manifold center bolts don't fit old style sbc heads. Easy enough to grind/re-drill them.

Checkers sells a thermostat neck for TPI. This was missing on the one we bought.

Try to get the throttle cable ad water kneck when you buy a setup.

Is $250.00 a good price for a TPI setup?

A guy I know locally is selling all the intake parts forward of the firewall as a package.

The setup includes the following:

Upper and lower manifolds

Runners

Fuel rails

Injectors

Distributor

Coil

HEI or ISE module?

ECU

All sensors

Wiring harness

Custom programmed chip for high performance 350

Air filter intake tract from the filter box(es) back

He says it uses a MAF sensor but I'm not sure about that, when I started to try to get more info regarding this aspect of it he seemed to get his terms confused. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought those systems were speed density.

He also said it came from an 89 IROC Z28 Camaro.

wheelman, that sounds like a good price for everything. Another thing to watch out for is injector size because most of the TPI units are off 305 engines.

tannji, megasquirt shouldn't give you much gain over the stock ECU. But it gives you flexibilty to tune yourself and add any upgrades you want. Like nitrous, turbo, bigger injectors and re-tune fuel and spark more easily than the stock ECU.

The plan with this setup is to add 2 280zx stock T3 turbos this winter and run 8-10 psi.

One thing to remember about going V8, injector soucres from import engines easily make big power potential. Most V8's only run around a 24# injector... Low specific output per cylinder.

Most import units are that big, if not bigger. Supra 440cc, hell Ford TBI is almost 500!

That's serious fuel flow potential!

I have had TPI on my mind for a project, but for some reason the obvious application of the MS to it totally never came into mind... I guess I flake from time to time, eh?

if you like fancy high dollar stuff for tpi you can get high flow runners from arizona speed&marine.throttle cables specific for tpi from lokar.i get lokar part# from thier website then order from summit.tpi unit makes good low/mid torque-just the thing in a z with good hook up.there is a guy on ebay that sell injectors cheap.the 350 engines had 24lbs.the 305s had 19s.30s and 42 are easy to get.

mind sharing a small install writeup on this? i have a 305 TPI motor in my volvo, and the stock harness is all buggered up (was done by the P.O.), i have a complete 305 TPI in it, and i have a complete MSnS sitting on the parts shelf...

sounds like somthing that with a decent write up i could knock out in a day, currently the car runs like ***...

I could probably put something together. It is an easier install than the 280zx turbo I think. If I have time today I'll put up a small writeup.

if you've got a digital camera and want to just shoot photos of all the places you tapped into, label em up, then upload your photos and tune files... should be pretty simple.

do you know off hand if the 305 is super picky about heating? were noticing a correlation of if it gets around 200+ degrees on the water temp it starts running like ***... since this is in a volvo we can't tell if its a normal camaro issue, or if were overheating since its in a volvo engine bay.

Nothing was tapped into for wiring. We had the TPI manifold on the car and megasquirt on the side and built a complete wiring harness from every sensor/injector to the megasquirt. So if your looking for a wiring diagram from original harness to megasquirt I can't help. I'll put up the info and see if its any help to anyone, but it might not be.

nope, i have a complete manifold on the car, and have no reservations about making a new harness.. so by all means, post away, i've got looms of wire, i'll build a new one...
