oil cooler

My view of the oil cooler is more a reliability/maintenance issue and not necessarily one of performance. In my car, without an oil cooler, my oil sits around the 210ºF, and on some high speed runs it may get up to 230ºF, so for me, I would not want to run it any cooler than that. There was a string not long ago about oil operating temperatures (try a search) and the problems with running oil not warm enough. Performance wise? I'd believe that the lower the temperature of the oil, the more hp it takes to circulate it through the block, plus the added weight of the cooler and plumbing. So it's a question of "do I really need one?” If you do need one, than the cooler is a means to prevent premature breakdown of the oil (or aid in keeping the engine temperatures down)

oil temps should reach a minimum of 215F to burn off moisture and lubricate correctly, oil tends to break down at temps over about 250F for mineral oils and about 280F for synthetics, so keep that in mind

coolant temps should be kept in the 190F-210F RANGE.

transmission fluid tends to work better in the 180F lower range because higher temps tend to lower trans life

Please ,slownrusty, Is it necessary to knock someone down for asking a question that YOU find to be ridiculous. I dont think its ridiculous for someone who knows less than you or I to believe that lowering oil temperature might help the engine to produce a few extra HP. I agree he should have maybe searched a little but no reason to be a jerk. And I suppose you have always known everything ?

Just search this site and zcar.com for information on oil coolers . there is a search button on both sites . You'll find alot of information. I wouldnt use it unless your running turbo or there is some other reason you might be overheating your oil.

peace

Grumpyvette has a great post here.

Yes, there is some power to be had in the oil but, let's just say it's not in running the oil temp cooler than need be. Search the net in general and there is tons of information about oil temps and oil control.
