JMortensen
That is some scary crap right there. Seems really odd to me that this would happen, since brass is sometimes fired out to another size. I was looking at a .257 Roberts Improved when I was about 17, and you took the regular store bought 257 Roberts ammo and fired it and it would totally change the shape at the end of the brass. Then it was 257 Improved brass and you could get just a little more powder in there when you reloaded it. Very weird. I'm guessing you threw the rest of that ammo away. Is this the first time you fired this gun? Maybe it has a problem in the chamber...
jt1
Just a combo of hard brass and a generous chamber. Although it looks bad, the safety risk is very low. Accuracy will suffer and of course the brass is junked. John
auxilary
the accuracy was horrible, and there was almost no risk of catastrophies. Checked with a few locals familiar with mausers and old ammo about this before continuing
Z-TARD
Wow, talk about generous headspace. What kind of Mauser are you shooting? It shouldn't be to difficult to rebarrel if you have a 98 variant. Like they said, probably not too dangerous, especially with a Mauser as they are designed to vent gas from ruptured cases away from your face. The accuracy thing kinda sucks though, might as well get a smoothbore musket with clearances like that . Check http://www.brownells.com and http://www.midwayusa.com for new barrels. They both carry barrels that will match the outside contour of the original military one. Mike
Rival5
Yeah a 98 isnt to bad to rebarrel. Just be careful early Mausers didnt have vents in the bolt to vent the gases like the 98, you could get some gases in the face or worse even have the bolt blow back into your face. I have a Gew (Gewehr) 98 and an 1891 Argentina Mauser. The 1891 isn't vented like the 98. I've had some of my Argentina ammo crack like yours. The blow back from the gases was very unpleasant. auxilary
mine is a turk m38 model year 1938, produced in '43. I believe it has blowback to vent gas. I'm looking at picking up some better ammo that aimsurplus.com carries, it's polish ammo manufactured in the 70s, which is much better than stuff I was using, stamped with 1946 The mosin nagant m44 I took with me did an excellent job. And it is true, in order to preserve accuracy, bayonet must be extended while firing! otherwise it does hit to the left, believe it or not

My friend has a 1902 model 94 and a 1873 or 74 .45 Colt Peacemaker, such sweet guns to shoot.
