FEnatic
I have two extra trannys in the garage, neither have shifters so I can't just go through the gears. I know one is a late model 81-83 non T-5 5speed, the other I was told is an early 5speed. I want to use the early one as it has better 1st and 2nd gears, BUT, how can I tell if it is a 5 speed or just a 4 by looking at it? Are there any differences in the 4 compared to an early 5 on the outside? Thanks
JMortensen
Put a shifter in it and try for 5th.
PeterZ
There's a bulge in the tailhousing where fifth gear lives. The bulge is on the bottom of the trans nearest the intermediate plate. Four speeds have more of a 45 degree angle in that area without the bulge. I agree: try it with a shifter.
FEnatic
Guess I'll pull the shifter from the driver to check them. Just wanted to know if there was an easy way to tell before taking apart stuff. Thanks
