240-280 strut clarification questions

Are all 240-280 Z front strut cartridges the same and interchangeable with all the 240-280 front strut tubes the same height ? .(KYB Gr2 # 361002 fits all 240-280 front strut tubes) ...............It appears that the strut tube diameters are 2.04 (?) inches for the 240 and early 260 while the outside diameter of the late 260 and 280 Z is 2.166 inches requiring that all standard 2 inch adjustable coil over sleeves have to be bored out slightly to fit the outside diameter of the 280 strut. see 2.170 coilover sleeve tube web site http://www.a1racing.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1734 ... .....It appears 240 and 280 Z rear strut cartridges are not interchangeable because the 240 rear strut tube is shorter in height....... 1985 thru early 1992 VW Golf and Jetta front strut cartridges KYB Gr2 # 364014 fit a 2 inch sectioned 280 Z front strut tube perfectly.

Jon...I did that with 280 z front cartridge to rear 280 Z strut tube and a 1 3/4" spacer on the Tomahawk project rear suspension. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/album?.dir=/392a Tokico Illumina are listed for 240 Z front #BZ 3015 and rear #BZ 3016...... 280 Z front #BZ3012 and rear # BZ 3013 indicating there is some difference (?) in the front struts.. maybe strut tube diameter with 208 Z strut cartridges being thicker in diameter since we know that the strut tube diameters are larger on the 280 Z. I have never owned a 240 Z with all mine being 280 Z's. What I am trying to do is "get a way" using a 240 Z front strut cartridge into a two inch sectioned rear 280 Zstrut tube (which will slightly expand my budget shoe string options) for a example: a number of used or never used performance 240 front strut cartridges are avaiable while hardly any 280 Z front strut cartridges are avaible for re-sale.

I think a very similar thread came upbefore and somebody said that there was no difference at all. IIRC it had to do with an ebay auction where someone thought they got the wrong struts, because the number was for the 240 and they had a 280 or vice versa. Basically the same thing you're talking about. The conclusion at that time was that they are the same strut, just with a different sticker on it. You can search for that thread, but it was a while back, maybe a year and a half...

I searched but believe you are right concerning the now avaiable 240-280 front cartridges are the same... LOL ! John C........ interesting point on stroke and valve given The MR 2 is rear/mid engine and the Golf/Jetta is front engine. In this backwater of Lane County , I have never had the opportunity to compare the lower priced replacement strut cartridges of Jetta/Golf-----MR2. The scrawny GTI strut cartridge is out for a 280 and the Golf/Jetta KYB GR2 is quite beefy. Without comparing the MR 2 to to the Golf/Jetta...my money would be on the Golf/Jetta...Of course when you step in the realm of Koni and Bilstein performance cartridges the game changes. Most likely the best bet for a range of 160 to 225 pound coilover spring performance street car would be adjustable Tokico Illuminas at KYB GR 2 prices
