Up here in the big NW 2 things are big coffe and micro beer. I know some guys hate micro beers but IMO they kick the crap out of Bud, Miller , Coors, etc..

 

Anyway here are some of my favs that should be in most areas (we have a ton of teeny tiny beers that sell at 1 or 2 stores). What are you drinking that I might be able to find and try out.

 

Stone Brewing's Arogant bastard and Ruination IPA

Rogue's Shakespere Stout, Brutal Bitter, and Dead Guy Ale

Mack and Jack's African Amber

Fat Tire

I love Dead Guy Ale. Every February the Rogue Brewery has a wharehouse sale and I stock up on Dead Guy.

 

I also love Deschutes Obsidian Stout and Black Butte Porter in the cold months. I used to drink nothing but Widmer's Hop Jack Pale Ale in the summer, but I can rarely find it anymore.

 

It's suprising how easy it is to brew your own. I can brew a fair copy of Full Sail's Nut Brown Ale. Mmmmmmm. Beeeer! :cheers:

Man I got my butt kicked last night! I was drinking Stone's Ruination and Bastard I am feeling it today!

 

Rogue is having a sale at all Rogue pubs for Labor Day, I might be out of town though :x

 

Stone is coming out with the Double Bastard in November. I really want to try it since I've heard alot of good things about it.

 

My buddy wants to start brewing but I hear it's real easy and it's real easy to screw up. So for now I'll just keep buying.

I've meet guys taht think because I only drink micro beers I'm labeled a beer snob or a puss. Micro beers sure aren't for puss'

 

I don't what goes on in people heads. Everything about micro beers rules!!!

Honestly, brewing your own is super easy and, with a small amount of diligence, can be done without screwing it up. I've only screwed up one batch in several years and had to pour it out. For $50 or less you can get the basic equipment you need at your local brew supply store. There is a book by Michael Jackson (no, not the pedophile) that lays out the steps to brewing your own. I can brew a batch (2 1/2 cases) for around $15 in supplies.

 

It's a lot like cooking. Everything is done to your taste. There are tons of recipes on the net.

 

It gets to be more expensive (moderately) when you malt your own grains, setup kegs/taps, but man, it's fun.

 

When I moved to the land of microbrew (Portland) 10 years ago, my very first new years party with friends was a micro-brew party. All the folks that showed up had to bring their own home-brews. What a blast. Tons of good beer to sample ( and a few bad ones). That's what started my brewing my own. It's easy and not really tought to screw up.

Hmmmm Sounds like something I'll need to look into. Know any recipes that taste like some of the beers I mentioned earlier?

 

I'll get a hold of the brew supply store, I've been meaning to go there for a while now.

When I visited the Mac & Jack's brewery in Redmond, I was amazed to learn that African Amber is dry hopped. This is normally done by adding dried hops at the very end of the brewing prcess and it gives the beer a real bitter hop slam that can be refreshing on a hot day but is kind of an acquired taste. What M&J do differently is to suspend the hops in a tea bag in a 5 gallon keg and let it age for a couple of weeks. That mellows the hops and gives the beer its great floral aroma and aftertaste. If you are in the Seattle area, and you like beer, you gotta try African Amber. It is only available in kegs, no bottles. Fortunately, most taverns and restaurants have it. They also make a kick *** porter, but it is harder to find.

Went to my locaol brew supply today!!!

 

I'm pretty excited after talking to the guy. He was telling me how he starts off most guys and that he teaches brewing classes on sundays one for beginers and one for the advanced brewer. Also he said most of his customers in it for the long haul (whatever that is) ditch bottles and go to kegging. A whole setup from top to bottom would be about $250 I already have a few things like a regulator and a place to get CO2 cheap so I should be able to knock off some of that intial bite out of the wallet.

 

I told him what beer I like to drink and he was telling me how to make the bitter stuff like Ruination and even mentioned he has a Arogant Bastard recipe!!

 

BTW: I'm going to the Stone brewery this week and plan on hauling a trunk full of beer back home to Washington!!!!

What he probably means is that after you clean and sanitize all the bottles required to hold 5 gallons(the most common batch size) of homebrew a few times you will quickly realize how much simpler a kegging system will make your life. As Wagz said homebrewing really isn't very difficult at all especially if you aren't malting you're own grain. The most important part of the whole process is making sure that everything the beer will touch is clean and sanitized.

It all sounded real easy when he was telling me about it. They already have malted grains for sale so that should save me some pain. He was saying it is only 2 weeks long, I always thought it was longer. I told him I don't mind waiting since I don't want to rush things and get a bad tasting beer out of it. What I'd really like is a beer like Arogant bastard with as much bite as ruination, when it comes to ales.

 

I was talking to my buddy and he's gonna go in half with me on the first setup for my house then we'll do one for his place. Looks my roomies mini-fridge is gonna turn into a kegerator wether he likes it or not :twisted: !!!

You're in Washington, right? Head up to B.C. and try Granville Island Maple Cream ale. Really good stuff. My dad and I brought home 8 six packs to last the year. There is another one I tried called R&B brewing Sun God pale ale. Best beer I've ever had, period.
