Has anyone seen my old '71 240Z around SF, CA? Want my Z back.

Was the first car I bought at 16. Bought a '71 Datsun 240Z w/ 220,000 original miles, all original w/ mag wheels, etc. Then head gasket blew and it turned into a project car. Built an L28 bored .040" over, flat top pistons, E31 head w/ bigger valves installed, high lift cam, 6-1 header, tripple 44mm Mikuni carbs, ported head, 5 speed tranny, sway bars, lowering springs/struts, wheels/tires, etc.

Then like an idiot (it was an impractical car at the time) I sold it to some Dot Commer from San Francisco in 2000. Now I wish I could find it again to build up and keep forever as the first car I bought. I even remember running into the infamous "Darius" and his Z at Autozone in Concord back in 1998.

Has anyone seen this Z around the Bay Area before? Any way to track it down from the license via DMV?

Thanks, here are some pics (sorry for the poor quality scans, I had no digicam in 2000):

You're serious?

Yes, and 100 like it. Seriously, this is basically a stock looking Z car and there are quite a few in the greater Bay Area. It's just luck if you EVER see your car again.

Not legally that I'm aware of----privacy laws and all that.

I bet there are not even 20 light red 1971 Datsun 240Z's in the Bay Area that look like mine, probably 2 at most that have the same wheels, mods, etc. I'm considering just getting anothe Z, but there is certain sentimental value attached to this one. I might end up getting a different one.

BTW, what do you consider a "stock looking Z car?" Anything without fender flares and a body kit? I can always do a carfax report with the VIN # to find out where it was last registered. Or have a cop friend run the plates maybe. Who knows.

Z's are not cars that you see everyday and especially when they are not primered or POS's. I'm 100% sure that if someone saw this Z on the road and them saw this post, they would remember seeing it. Hell, I remember almost every non-POS Z car I've run across on the road.

Just step all over the mans dream.

Hmm, I reread my post and I did come across a bit sarcastic, not that I really meant to.

Sorry, Bub. It just seems like the 240Z days are numbered. After passing through a couple of owners, the cars never seem to be the same. I guess it's just odds are that it may come down to that. I do hope you find your car and that you can buy it back. You never know.

I would buy another decent one and make it into what I had, but that's just me.

And yes, a Z with after market wheels and headlight covers is still "stock looking" to me. The other mods are internal and I can't see them from the street. I'm NOT 'dissing' the way your car looks, I actually like it, but it still looks stock to me.

Good luck finding your car. There are often stories of people finding their old cars from their younger days and maybe this will be one of them. Good luck.
