Altima 3.5 SE meets sleeper, gets big surprise

First, let me say I don't advocate street racing but this pompous ass just got to me. I was driving the engine that I'm transferring into a '72 240Z this summer. It's in my "mule" right now, an '82 Maxima a/t. It's a street engine not a race engine, an LD28 shortblock with an N42 head and 280Z EFI and 280ZX ignition. 10:1, headers and custom exhaust.

So, this jerk is riding my rear bumper as I'm slowing to stop at an intersection in a small town. We were both turning right onto an open four lane highway with a 60mph speed limit, but apparently this guy was in a big hurry and going into a road rage because he was too stupid to know that a constant red arrow on a traffic signal means that you stop and wait for green. If it's a flashing arrow, you stop, then go if it's clear.

By then, I knew what was going to happen as soon as there was a green arrow and we turned...he was going to swing out into the other lane and stomp on it, leaving me and my pathetic old Maxima in his dust. That's not how it went though, because I nailed it as he came around me and off we went. He was probably glancing in his rear view mirror to see how far back he left me, he saw me in his side mirror just slowly falling back from his right quarter panel. Not at all what he was expecting! We were well beyond the speed limit when he got off it and I shot by. In the end, he

had beaten me by a couple of car lengths, but clearly I left his ego in my dust and I'm sure he won't be telling anyone this story and is confused about what happened. DAW

Well, that's the next engine it will have: LD28 shortblock, top end from '82 ZXT (P90, turbo, EFI and electronics), intercooler, and swap 3spd lock-up a/t for 4spd a/t from '84 300ZXT; test & tune, then transfer to Z car. The static c.r. will be about 8-8.5:1 so it will be a low-pressure turbo setup. What's fun is making the engine quick then putting it in the lighter car. DAW

One thing that I have learned is that the 3.5 SE is fast!!!! My parents bought one I and I try to drive it whenever I can (mom I am out of gas, can I drive your car). The car has 240hp and weights 4300lbs (kinda heavy), but the engine is sooooo sweet! :D:D But the car has alot of torque steer when the gas pedal is floored--like no steering, hope nothing is in front like a curve! It accelerates like lightning, I like alot!! ;)

HAA HAA my dad drives a 84 maxima!!! 70 year old chinese guy driving a sleeper?

It uses a L24 too! so I bet lot of the JTR stuff will work on this POS too... Imagine that a maxima with a 350.. it would finally be smog legal!

I also have a 92 MAX but it has the VG30E and it not very fast at all except on the highway. It would be cool to see a 350 Max too. It could be done on the older cars! :D Sweet

The Altima for sure does not weigh 4300 lbs. Maybe if it was loaded with passengers but that car weighs in the lower 3000's I believe. Otherwise 230 lb.ft. torque couldn't move it like that.

Haha, thats cool. Jeez 4300 lbs? What have they been feeding it?

The comment about a 350 in a maxima reminds me of a conversation Davy Z and I had at Rio Vista. RacerX had brought his daughters restored 810 which used the L series motor. I commented wouldn't it be neat with a JTR 350 in it? (hell it might even bolt in like a Z, I've never looked under the hood.). Imagine a old pristine 810 four door smoking a F-body or Poontang... haha...

my neighor when i was really young like 12, has the ugliest car in the world i thought, very loud car and my dad would always go over to his house and they would work on this car

my dad laughs at me now because i have the same car now, it was a primered 810 with

a 350/four speed combo that used to blast at wot with glasspacks up and down my block

everytime after he worked on it, vroooom up the block, burn all kinds of rubber and looked

like complete crap!!!! this was in the late eighties, and i guess people didnt fuss like they do now about noise, i can remember my dad instigating the guy to "light em up"

I think Terry's right on the year, I remember (vaguely and its foggy haha) my pard's lusting after the 810 in late 78/early 79, they were Datsun minitruck guys and the Z motor and independent suspension really had them wanting one.

Ps: I loved the little 1200 Datsun (specially the fastback), I'd love to have one with a SR20 with BOOST in one. ;)

This is exactly what the sticker on the driver's door says

Date 12/01

GRWR FR 2399 LB

GVWR 4374 LB

GRWR RR 1991 LB

If I misread the weigth before I am sorry but I understood that the GVWR would be the gross weight. But I have been known to assume wrong before!!!

The Altima 3.5 weighs approximately 3200 lbs. The GVWR is the weight of the vehicle plus what it can carry. So in this case about 900 lbs. If there is interest in the exact number I can get that to you. I just weighed one a little while ago on the scales at work.

Thanks

John
