Guest Anonymous
My buddy has a 914 with a 327 in the mid section, pretty stock, and GT flares on the wheel wells. He pulls low 13s and rips corners like nothing I'v ever seen. I'am buying a Z with a 305/350 and hope to give him a run for his money. Any one ever tangle with one of these? Also, dose ay one know of any web sites for these? Thanks!

Scottie-GNZ
I built one back in the late 70s with the same flare kit and a genuine 302 SBC (boy wish I had that car now). I used the Kennedy Engineering kit. 1st gear is pretty useless because of the gearing and the shift pattern with 1st being where 2nd is in a normal H pattern. Makes for destruction when trying to do a quick 1-2 and the clutch needs care. I never drag raced mine (meaning I never dumped the clutch) and only used 2nd-5th with about 62mph in 2nd. 13s is not considered quick for a hybridZ unless you go with a 305 or garden-variety 350. If he has any power, however, be careful on the top-end .
Guest Anonymous
I think they're swapping in Northstars in fiero's, perhaps they can be put in to 914's as well. At any rate, with a V8 (or even the boxer flat 6) I wouldn't mind having a 914, its rather the black sheep of the porsche family, I'd still like to have a 911 just because I rode in one when I was a kid and loved the 6 weber induced sounds of a boxer 6 screaming towards redline. Very nice sounding engine IMHO. Regards, Lone
johnc
Don't ever discount a 914. This car was the overall winner at the OTC. 450hp single turbo 3.2L, 1700 lbs, 14" wide rear slicks, 12" wide front.
BayAreaZT
Has anyone driven a 928 w/chevy V8? My brother has a 928 that is just sitting around. Ideal candidate for the swap. Gotta finish the Z first though.
pparaska
Someone near Orange CA is building a V8 928.
Guest Anonymous
Late model corvette would be a natural for that 928, its got the same sort of transaxle arrangement the new vette does, just beggin' for a bowtie... Regards, Lone Ps: Can't discount a car like that John, thats for sure. I could live real easily with a car like that...
Guest Frank280z
About a year ago there was a 928 with a chevy crate 502 fi 500+ hp. Backed up with a manual. Not sure of the tranny make. But it was a 928s. BLACK with gold bbs rims. Got around 25k for it. Sweet ride. I personally don't care for the rear end looks of them though. But with that engine combo you probably wouldn't see it
Guest super280z
sounds like a pretty good idea IMO. i've seen a chevy powered 914 and one 944. suposedly there's a guy in Houston rolling around in a ls1 powered late model 911. sheesh.. Guest Azel
hmmm...I'm a very openminded guy when it comes to engine swaps BUT the V8 RX7 just depresses me....Why would you wanna do that? It'd add lots of weight and ruin the balance of that car. Totally changes the personality of the car, not sure if it's for the good either.. While we're on the subject of hybrid Porsche 914's. There was a guy who a SOHC turbo 3.0L 300zx engine. His webpage is no longer available.

denny411
Everyone has their own ideas about what makes a car great. For some it`s going down the 1/4mi as fast as possible, and for others they would rather run on a road course. this is what makes our hobby so interesting. A few years ago I saw an rx7 street car with full interior running low 10`s in the 1/4 with an na sbc and a narrowed 8 3/4 mopar rear. I`m sure it was no good in the turns but watch out in the straights. My point is, This is a hobby, and everyone enjoys different thing from their hobbies.I`m sure there are plenty of guys out their that wonder why anyone would go through the trouble of putting a v8 in a z, a jag,a fiero,a porche or a vw. My reply to them... "Because I can"

Guest Azel
Very well said. I do like the machine-work in that girdle though but I guess I have to deal with the fact that not all engine swaps have to be practical afterall I've had some weird ideas about putting a T78 turbo Skyline motor in that lil dinky
Guest Azel
I don't mean to be a jerk either but most of the folks here make mods that actually improve their cars. Swapping in an SBC for an Lseries is a practical mod, more power without sacrificing handling whereas the V8 RX7, I don't see how that could improve the Rx7's handling. Also, the Mazda's superb rear-end would probably have to be swapped out because there's no way it could handle the torque. The 4.12? gear would mean horrible fuel economy during freeway driving. I've ridden in an Rx7 before, it's a very very unique finesse car, I just don't see how an SBC would be beneficial.
