Guest RWilliKiwi
My 78 280 seems to run strong for a few seconds, then dies. If I try to give it even the smallest amount of gas it dies even faster. The problem started as poor running/misfiring and got worse and worse over two days and now wont stay running at all. Started by replacing the AFM, nothing. Then I noticed that the fast idle solenoid had a crack in it, replaced that and still nothing. Then the cold start injector was leaking (I think I broke it when I was wrenching at the idle valve) so I replaced that and still the same result. Even tried a new ECU, no luck. Spark seems good, good fuel pressure. I'm looking all over for a vac leak but havent found anything. I'm out of ideas, unless the TPS could cause this problem (Same result with it disconnected). If so, which of the wires is the output so I can test it? Oh, and could it possibly be that the fast idle valve isnt opening? The connector is a bit mangled and is possible not making contact. It seems to behave the same with it disconnected. I messed with the idle screw up and down though (stays running longer with it closer to being closed). Throw some ideas at me guys, I'm stuck. Thanks
jtmny1999
Have you tried checking the tempareature head sensor ? that happen to me once car acted the same. On the filter side next to the heater core hoses.....
Guest RWilliKiwi
Sweet I will try that!
Cruez
Fuse links not wet or corroded correct? TPS can cause this also.
PeterZ
Do you have good pressure while the car is running or just cranking? Proper air/fuel, spark at the right time and compression is all you need. Branch off from there. Good luck.
Guest RWilliKiwi
Fuse links not wet or corroded correct? TPS can cause this also. Another thing I will check tomorrow. About the TPS - I cant fugure out where I should check the voltage from. I'll manage, but is there any place that is easiest (like from the ECU pins or something?). The gauge reads good pressure after it dies so I would imagine its fine when running, I'll look closer at that also though. I know, it should be that simple.. Thats why I almost want to give up and just throw MegaSquirt on it now, but dont want to be stuck if the problem persists. Oh, and anybody know the easiest way to get the head sensor off without breaking the connector?? Looks like I have to take off a dozen other things, perhaps worth buying whatever specific tool for.
