mobythevan
If I used a wire wheel on the die grinder to knock off the surface rust, the resulting surface is fairly smooth. Should I scuff it before spraying on Hammerite coating? I will try an experiment but wondering what the experience has been.

Tim240z
Hammerite likes a bit of rust to grab to. Leave the part to rust a little for a while. Make sure that you read the recoat times on the directions....if you don't recoat in the first few hours, then you have to wait a week or something to recoat..... Here comes trouble
Addition of thinner to Hammerite (I used the POR15 thinner) tends to smooth the surface of Hammerite and give a glosser finish
Jolane
Any idea on whether it can be thinned with Lacquer, MEK, or other? I have some that is just a little too thick, but would like to use it. I tried some on a clean piece of steel, and was not all that impressed with the finish or the durability. Maybe I should have let it rust a little. Maybe the stuff is just a little too thick. Joshua
mobythevan
Here is what I found out after messing with it for a few days now. If metal is heavily rusted hit it with die grinder wire wheel, then lightly sand with 80 grit by hand. It goes on great and the finish is real nice (IMO) If metal has light rust hit with wire brush by hand lightly and then apply. In any case if you shine down to the metal, forget it. Even scuffing with 80 grit it didn't apply well. Just my experience.
