Jonas240z
Hello guys; I have an electronic ignition (XR700) setup on my '73 240z and i was wondering if i need to take the ballast resistor off or do i leave it as is. The car came with this ignition when i bought it so i don't know if this is correct. Thanks for the help!
Mike C
Have you searched on Crane's web site? That's where I would start. My experience with the Pertronix was you could run it either way, but most effective eliminating the ballast.
AK-Z
It should have an internal balast like relay in it already. it wouldn't have hurt anything if you were running both.
JMortensen
Jump the ballast. Just run a wire from one side to the other. That defeats it and if you do have other wires plugged in there you don't have to re-route anything. I got hit by my system with and without the ballast resistor. The one with the ballast was uncomfortable. The one without HURT. The ballast is there to reduce the voltage to the coil to save the points from frying. The more voltage to the coil the hotter the spark. The only thing to be concerned with is that original coil is only meant for 8V or whatever that system runs, so if you still have a stock coil you'll burn it up. Get a modern 12V coil from Crane or MSD or whoever. You won't be sorry you did.
Jonas240z
So do i just connect the two ends that go to the ballast together and take the ballast off right? If you're right this little mod should make the most out off the PS60, megnacor wires, and the NGK plugs. The crane PS60 coil should be good enough correct? Thanks for all the help!! AK-Z
Yeah you can just remove the ballast resistor completely and just connect the 2 leads together.
260ZRED
Can I ask why didn't Nissan remove the balast for the L28ET?? I could understand its placement in a stock L24/L26, but L28ET?? They must have had a good reason to leave it there? or no?
