Hey guys umm general question so here goes... On a normal 350 v8, if I were too go ahead and use a steel crank some H beam rods and buy some keith black hypereutetic pistons at lets say 8.5:1 compression would that be a bad combo for a boost setup?? This will not ever see real high boost like over 16 pounds but I want it to be safe at around 12-14psi and I just hear mixed reviews on the keith blacks. I know i should just get forged ones but i can get a set of keiths for like 50 bux off a friend and well yah im sure ya understand.... also the tuning would be right on this motor also...

ANYTIME your running a supercharged combo, your better off useing a set of FORGED pistons simply because DETONATION,EVEN MILD DETONATION will eventually destroy pistons.. ANY PISTONs but it will DESTROY HYPER OR CAST pistons far faster than FORGED PISTONS ....the differance in cost is only a few hundred dollars ($150-$250 in most cases, but the expence youll incure should the piston come apart at speed is far greater and the chances iit will occure far higher with hypereutectics than forged, personally I would not consider anything but FORGED PISTIONS in a supercharged application

Have to agree w/Grumpyvette here. ScottyGNZ had Hypereutectics in his GNZ and blew a head gasket without having any problems from the pistons - the key of course being to AVOID DETONATION.

IMHO, you mightg as well get forged and have peace of mind/fudge factor when dynoing and tuning on the road.

i understand completely guys just I can get those keith blacks for pretty much nothing and Im not wanting to go balls out on the build. I know they will work fine but i understand the peice of mind factor with forged stuff... I may just opt to save a few hundred more and watch ebay or just buy a set of new arias pistons!!

Agree with this statement and while I am not singing the praises of hypers, hypers have come a long way in their development. I use SpeedPros with coated skirts and running 25psi boost with pump gas/alky inj. Well over 520rwhp with more to come. Ironically, some of the stigma on hypers and forced induction have come from KBs but mostly from owners who do not take the care or have the skill/knowledge to avoid detonation.

I do not know enough about KBs development of hypers over the years but I would not put a specific piston in a forced induction engine just because I can get them "cheap". Be honest with yourself in answering the question about how diligent (anal actually) and good you are at tuning a supercharged engine and how good your engine management and tuning equipment are. If the answer is so-so, then do not use the KBs and you are still in danger with forged as Grumpy said.

One of KB's Cheif Dyno Operators used to be on this site (Mainly to lurk) a lot and he called me regularly to check in and just chat. His name is Oz Cheeck and Oz was running an 8 second Datsun TRUCK with a SBC TT setup, running KB Hyper pistons with zero problems.

It has a lot to do with the tune, and how lean you try to push it. Oz was willing to comp me a set to try if I ever boosted a motor. Never got to that point, but it was nice to know guys like Oz were out there...

That said, I'd go forged for the added protection, which is exactly what we did on my LS1 and my 383 Stroker! :2thumbs:
