93 SHO, dead spot at WOT..

Recommended Posts

I hope its ok to post this here. I havent been able to find an SHO forum with the answer, or one that would allow me to post (moderate new members.. =/)

Anyway, 93 SHO, I'll be putting it on a diagnostic tool ASAP, but want to get an idea what you all think.

The car has nothing at WOT, literally. If you hold the gas just below WOT, about 75% it usually pulls pretty damn well. Strong and solid really but as soon as you fully depress the throttle all the way the engine goes limp. Its immediate and seems to happen pretty much at any RPM. WOT the engine hits a wall. Wont accell and will barely maintain speed. RPM's wont climb.. It just craps out. Now, again, accell in lower than WOT positions is good. Its a little erratic though.. Sometimes it pulls harder than other times, its weird.

Also, if I rev the engine in nuetral its very slow to drop in revs. Kinda hangs and slowly backs back down to idle. I also have a small (300-400RPM) idle jump. Very rich on start-up, doesnt want to rev at all, sounds like its bogging.

Does this sound like a potential TPS and/or IAC issue?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I thought they don't have a Daig tool for OBD-1 ECUs. OBD-11 came in 96 I believe. Are you talking about a Taurus? Could be the TBS.

You can look up error codes off of the ecu with out a tool. Not sure for ford but for dodge, you just have to turn the key 3 timesin 5 seconds (without cranking) and the error code will blink from the engine light in 2 digit numbers. So blink blink pause blink blink pause bink pause blink pause will give you 22 and 11. You can look up what it means by looking up "OBD error code ford" in google.

check fuel pressure under load.replace the fuel filter.the fuel pump is in the tank with the sender.you can replace it with a mustang pump.if want the car to run like new it will take some work.before obd2(1996) fords gave very little data output for diagnostics except for dtc's.if you have fuel pressure it could be a maf problem.these engines lived on the maf.try pricing some ford spark plug wires??$250+.cars were rev limited to save alternators and a/c compressors.dont use anything but motorcraft or ngk spark plugs.these cars are a major pain to work on .i work as a ford dealer tech.if you have to put a clutch in it the motor has to be hanged on a engine bar and the subframe has to be pulled.only real problem besides driveability was water pumps at about 120k miles.water pump runs on timing belt.clutch was to small for the engine.a/c systems always leaked.good luck.

You might want to check to see if the secondaries are opening. If for some reason the computer thinks they are open and they really aren't...its going to act goofy...

(edit) hmm just noticed you said at any rpm... the secondaries usually dont open until 3500-3900 rpm...

They arent opening. I checked, as per your suggestion. I dont think that explains the WOT issue, but it does go a long way to explaining why the throttle seems so erratic. Sometimes it pulls, sometimes its dead past about 4k, which is when they open. My guess is the opening is erratic.

I havent had a chance to figure out just whats causing them not to open though.. Their getting vacuum, they close on start-up (their naturally open.. so when the engine is started and they see vac they pop closed) so the vac is good. I suspect the sensor itself.
