turbobluestreak
Ok guys I'm all set to start rebuilding my rack and pinion I've made the tools necessary to take the unit apart and have all the new seals from Nissan and ready to go. but my fsm says coat with grease and I’m confused because I don't know what kind of grease to use and if it would matter because of it being a power steering rack and pinion. Does anyone know what kind of grease is to be used with this? Is there such a thing as automatic transmission assembly grease that I could use? tbs
jhaag
I am interested in hearing about the rebuild as you do it. I wonder if a company that rebuilds rack & pinion steering could answer your question? I don't have any experience with these firms. -http://www.steeringrack.com/ -http://www.steeringgearrebuilders.com/ I just converted my '79 ZX from power recirculating ball to power rack & pinion with a new (modified) steering linkage (I want to add headers). There is a rough feel to it, though, when I turn the wheel so I'm not sure if the rack needs rebuilding or if I need to have a better bearing to support the double u-joint. I'm kind of stumped at this point and mulling things over. John
AK-Z
I thought that the 280zx only came in recirc. ball power steering or the rack and pinion. Did you do a coversion or something? Does it have a powr steering pump?
turbobluestreak
power rack and pinion 81-83 for sure came with it not sure about earlier years though. Well I'll just have to keep looking around and maybe find something. tbs
zcarnut
The 280ZX came with either power recirculating ball steering, power rack-and-pinion or even a manual rack depending on year and options.
Cody 82 ZXT
I had the manual rack in a '79. I really liked it at the time but, that was when I was alot younger.
GLENN280ZX
To add to this, if you are swapping to a rack set-up either manual or power you must use that x-member also, and there is a different x-member for:power-rack, man. rack and rec.ball. Yes there is a automatic trans assembly grease, made by valoline.
turbobluestreak
Cool I just tore mine down an extra junk rack and pinion to see if I could tell what kind of grease and I found a section in the manual that said bearing grease, I'm not fond of the idea of using bearing grease, so I might use auto trans grease. But I'll let you all know for sure when I call up my Nissan parts guy I think they have done a few there before. tbs
