moodah Posted April 5, 2006 Share Posted April 5, 2006 1983 2+2 280zx over a 3 month period or so my handbrake had slowly been degrading. Why? i have no idea. To cut a long story short, i just got the car back from the mechanic who has told me that itll cost between 500-700 to have it fixed. He said theres a cylinder inside either brake that needs to be machined since the threads are stripped. Can someone explain this to me? im failing to understand how a screw-like device can be rethreaded whilst maintaining its dimension around the circumference of the cylinder? Im looking through the victoria british magazine & manual to find this part, i have no idea what its called though.. Cody 82 ZXT Posted April 5, 2006 Share Posted April 5, 2006 Yes, there is a small cyninder inside the caliper but, it's not like a brake piston. Paz8 Posted April 5, 2006 Share Posted April 5, 2006 83 ZX's have a different rear brake caliper than earlier ZX's. The same caliper piston that applies the brakes also applies the parking brake via a threaded screw in the rear of the piston, this makes the parking brake "self adjusting" as the pads wear down. Buy a pair of used calipers off someone on this site, will be far cheaper, and don't go back to that same guy to have them installed. Jack up the rear of your car and see if the back wheel turns with the parking brake OFF, trans in neutral, if so then DO NOT use the hand brake until your new calipers are installed and adjusted. j260z Posted April 6, 2006 Share Posted April 6, 2006 $700 sounds like a load of crap. find out how much remanufactured calipers will run you and how much you get for your cores. if you are confident in your mechanical abilities i can't see removing and reinstalling a set of rear calipers taking more than an afternoon. even if you take your car in to a mechanic i can't see them charging more than 3 hours to r & r them.
