280zwitha383
First, welcome. Second, what would make it any more (un)reliable than a newer car?
HowzDat
maybe the question should be what are common problems or things i should look out for? i was told after the engine rebuild the car puts out about 400ish hp but i bet its less. The car also supposedly weighs 2400 is that about right and i was told it runs 12's. also it still has the origional drum brakes in the rear? would that be a problem. A lot of problem areas depend on what you're going to do with it. If you're going to rag on it practically everything is a potential problem (a few specifics are the rearend if it's still an R180, cooling, and probably the frame twisting from hard launches). Is it a standard or automatic and what model? I would say that a carbureted 327 with HEI is a very dependable setup enginewise. A points type setup will probably be more maintainance (switch to HEI). Make sure it keeps good oil pressure especially when it's hot. Visually inspecting the oil for darkness and any contaminants and also smell it for gas or a burnt smell. Some would suggest a compression test which is not a bad idea but takes time. You can probably get a good idea how worn the engine is by driving it and seeing if it cruises or if you have to seemingly give it more gas than you think you should, driving it hard making sure it accelerates right and doesn't smoke, and listening to how long it takes the engine to stop when you turn it off. The rest of the drivetrain really depends on how you drive it if it checks out initially. Have you not driven the car yet?! If it's not an overdrive tranny and it has the usual gears like a 3.54 or maybe even a 3.90 you will have a very high cruising rpm which will not make a good daily driver. Unless you're getting a REALLY good deal on it I would make sure you test drive it and inspect it very thoroughly for rust and the above problems, there are probably a few more problem areas that I haven't thought of but mostly you need to get a good feel of the cars condition and make sure the engine swap was done well. In the future please use the search function

HowzDat
Yes that is it im pretty sure. Hopefully I will pick it up sat. It would really be a dream come true for me. I would baby that car so much. I'm nervous beyond belief right now, I hope everything works out. Yes it is up in Sac, and i am in Walnut Creek so it is about a hour and a half drive. I dont even think he knows I know about this site or him being on it. I called him to ask him a cupple questions today and tell him that i was on the forum but he wasnt there so hopefully I will talk to him tomorrow or he will call me back later tonight, wont be sleeping much thinking about the car . The last two cars I put down payments on fell through. One was even from a dealer and the dealer crashed it driving to the body shop to get it detailed the day before I was going to pick it up. Like the others and even more so with this it seems so perfect and I have my fingers crossed and my hopes high.
DavyZ
I saw the ads for Brett's old car on Craigslist. You have bought it from the person who bought it from him. The car was great when we saw it last and it performed very well too. I think Brett had worked out any bugs in the conversion and sold it a year or two afterward. He did some nice work on that car. Congrats on your purchase. The car should be fine to drive daily from what I remember of it. Davy
HowzDat
And it will be driven daily. I also have my 280zx for when i need to fit more then 1 other person in the car, and when i feel like saving some money on gas:mrgreen: . As anxious as ever. hope everything works out and i get it this sat. And im glad i found the forum, its kind of ironic in a way too.
Heavy Z
Welcome to Hybrid Z, I like your name... Congrats on buying my old car. I'm sorry that things didn't work out so that Shan could keep it but I'm glad to see you're psyched about owning the Z yourself. There are some pics in my gallery if you haven't checked it yet. It's kind of funny, my Z ends up going to walnut creek and that's where I bought my LS1 FD. Once you get it we could meet if you want to and I could give you a rundown of what's been done to the car, my brother lives only about 10 min away from walnut creek and I'll be there often to run Mt. Hamilton in my FD now that the rain has stopped. Brett
HowzDat
Yeah we should meet up sometime once I get it. It is funny all the irony and coincidences that I have noticed with this car. I am very glad I found this forum too. Still anxiously anticipating this sat. -mike
