wingnutthehutt
I haven't been following this whole saga, been out of town for two weeks, but I do agree with the no political discussions rule. Don't ask don't tell really brings us together as a forum becuase we all have one commonality and that's love of the Z car. If I started talking politics, religion, or anything else debatable unrelated to cars, different members would judge me based on my views. I don't know who you guys voted for, and I don't want to know, which doesn't mean I don't care. I DO want to know if you can help me paint my car, if I'm crazy for wanting to put a turbo Hayabusa engine in it, and also help other people with any knowledge that I may have. Stickies serve the same purpose as the speed limit sign on your local country road- You can disobey the law, but be prepared to pay the price. Zhadman
If I started talking politics, religion, or anything else debatable unrelated to cars, different members would judge me based on my views. I think that is a large part of the problem. People are, for the most part, emotionally attached to thier political and religious viewpoints. SOME individuals feel that thier viewpoint is the ONLY viewpoint... that doesn't leave room any for 'side-to-side' action. As a result alot of topics have turned from reasonable (and respectfull) debates into flat out slug fests. The key, in my opinion, to having a great (and mature) debate is the ability to concede points. Typically, when one cannot make concessions in a discussion, they resort to name-calling and insults. Once the pot is soured... it hurts the entire forum. You can say that this forum is "Not a democracy" and you can call it a "dictatorship", but I don't see it that way. The Moderators and Admins are merely doing what they can to ensure that HybridZ's quality level remains high. That quality directly relates to post content and member maturity. The Mods and Admins are people, too, and are not fallable. Even if I don't believe in every decision they make I applaud them for thier efforts. Does believing in God, hating the government, boycotting oil companies, or selling Amsoil (or whatever it is) matter when I need some technical help? Does my suspension setup care what political stand point JohnC takes? NO. But if I disliked John's views (or John disliked mine ) I could potentially miss out on some valuable information. The ENTIRE board could potentially miss out on his experience because we allowed our personal viewpoints to cloud our real purpose here: Z cars, Z car performance and engine swaps. Further... our search archives could be filled with hundreds of posts that contained NO technical or relevant information and were merely shouting matches and temper tantrums. I love to talk politics and religion (since quite a few of my views are against the grain), but I recognize that I don't have to have these discussions with everyone, everywhere and all the time. Sometimes these discussions cloud our perceptions and limit the quality (and potential value) of our friendships, acquaintences, business relationships...etc. If you knew everything about everyone chances are you wouldn't like anyone... So..uh... JohnC... What about that suspension setup? Sorry John for using you as an example!
johnc
I'm always used as a (bad) example... Just to clarify, the quote of mine that Norm is using as his SIG was from a private e-mail (not a HybridZ PM or post) responding to an e-mail of his (which I won't post). Also, Norm wasn't banned because of the gas boycott thread, Norm was banned after a number of attempts spanning months to get him to follow the rules here. Even that oil boycott thread wouldn't have triggered the ban. His subsequent post regarding speed limit discussions finally tipped the scales. Guest tony78_280z
Keep it up, and you will have to return to your ZCAR.COM sandbox." --John Coffey HYBRIDZ[/size'] That is funny. That is sig worthy!
RB26240Z
All the hard work and dedication by the admins is appreciated on this site. It's very simple, "there are rules and you just go by the rules". It's that simple. Henry
