Why The Wheel Industry Sux....

Recommended Posts

Well this is just wonderful news... Seems that Centerline doesn't feel it is safe to make a 4 lug 17X9.5 wheel. The widest they will go is 17X8. However, the widest tire you should run in a 45 series or lower profile tire is 225.... So it looks as though I'm gonna have to work something out with either going 5 lug or finding another manufacturer, although I bet that other wheel makers are going to say the same thing...

Damned them... This fuels my anger over them and their lack of wheel selection for the Zcar. According to Art Singer, editor for Sport Z, there are over 100,000 zcars registered in 37 states... 100,000 Zcars... Doesn't that account for a market share? I don't get it.

OK, I'm done.

Mike

Mikelly, I am with you. I do not desire the various wheel combos that you do, yet, but I am appalled at how hard it is to just find plain old wheels for our cars. Especially inexpensive ones. I can't get anything for them locally in Alabama. I have even been told that I didn't want 15" wheels cause they won't ever fit. Ha!

I must say that I think our problem is not numbers. We have a sufficient number of Z cars on the roads. The problem is that, as a group, we don't spend enough money! I mean, most folks are not gonna put expensive wheels on a $1000 car. Just my 2 cents. I hate it as much as anyone.

Hi Mike,

Yes indeed. I have been writing and talking with lots of different wheel manufactures and very few makes 16" or 17" wheels for our car. One has to go to a 2 or 3 piece modular wheel and spend $400-$600 to get the fitment one needs. I even called ROH in Australia and they will custom make a rim for me but the costs were outrageous. This is not a $100K car. And if you happen to damage one you are really SOL.

You mentioned above the number of Z's on the road. Unfortunately, it is but a drop in the ocean compared to the millions of current FWD cars being built. I don't want to rain on your parade but the only way to "help" our situation is to go to 5lug and this will open up a few more doors for you. I am doing this to the rears now and have the 5lug hubs for the fronts. My new wheels are on order and should be here in 4weeks.

Sometimes wheels aren't advertised for Datsun...but...Here are some other cars that used the 4 x 4.5" wheel bolt circle:

60-73 Ford 6-cyl Mustang, Falcon, Maverick

58-80 MGA, MGB, MGC

Dodge (Mitsubishi) Colt, Arrow, Sapporro

Most Mazda RWD

Most Toyota RWD, except pickups

Well I have found a set of 17X9 5 star (Cobra R knockoffs) wheels that will work if I convert to five lug. Now I need to get over that hurdle. Just ordered some 5 lug hubs from Zbarn, so now I just need to sort out the rest! Issue resolved... Reason I needed the wider width of 9 inch wheels is the tire selection calls for that wide of a rim.
