e-brake spot calipers ?

I got mine about 6-8 months ago for around $55 each, plus shipping from www.martelbros.com . They just drop shipped them to me.

 

These were not the polished ones, but the cheaper powdercoated or painted ones.

 

Yeah, pretty expensive, considering their's no real precision machining needed for hydraulics and there were assembled with the activating lever flipped over the wrong way (which I fixed).

Mike - don't need no polished stuff smile.gif Since the Outlaws are a nice black having polished spots wouldn't make much sense.

 

Have you checked through any of the Street Rod type mags? If I can dig one up I'll try to find some cheaper prices - kind of in my interest to do so huh? (lol)

I am ordering brakes next week and I like the idea of the willwood spots but I was just wondering if this was the best way to go, or if there are other reliable options.

 

pparaska: have you been able to test your spot calpier set up?

Only from a 25 mph roll - it seems to work fine. If possible, use the hole in the actuation lever that's closer to the pivot, as the throw on the Z cable is limited and the handbrake handle has to be up pretty far to activate the brake in my car. I do have the caliper play adjusted to the bear minimum as well.

So let's see here... $55 each for spots, around $90 for the calipers, plus custom brackets with an as yet unknown price... How much are the ugly single piston iron 240SX calipers? I'm thinking that this will be more expensive but much better performing and much better looking for a very reasonable delta in cost. We'll see, I look forward to bolting these puppies on! Anyone else interested in a set? The more the merrier...

Well right now it looks like this:

 

Rotors: $120 (Shipping included is what Mike SCCA Charged me)

Calipers: $180 (Plus shipping)

Pads: $35 (Est. Plus shipping)

Spots: $110 (Plus shipping)

Bracket: ???Unknown

 

Mike?SCCA can better ball park this, and shipping would go down if he was packaging it all up for you.

 

Assume about $500 plus the unknown on the bracket... Still not bad for way superior brakes, appearance and Performance...

Ouch! smile.gif Homing in on the cost of the darned front ones now aren't we? This is what happens when there's no darned integral E-brake on the caliper you choose.

 

Just out of curiosity has anyone looked at say the Honda calipers? I noticed in Sport Compact Car that they were doing a rear wheel upgrade using an OEM Honda caliper - it's got an integral EBrake. Couldn't tell if it was iron or aluminum but it might be worth looking into perhaps. There's just got to be something out there darn it. I'm commited to the Outlaws now though (shrug).

Has any one ever used the E brake that hold the drive shaft? They use a rotor and a caliper that mount to a diff housing. Not a bolt on, but they could be adapted. I have seen them in Street Rodder.

i guess you could use the truck brake idea and use it on the half-shaft.. more room there..

i think the best is the spot calipers or just the hydraulic ebrake smile.gif er i mean "park-lock"

The ParkLok is exactly the route I chose. I have never in 18 years of driving used the E-brake in an emergancy situation. I don't think it is necessary for the small amount of mileage we Zv8ers will be driving our cars, and the only good use for the darned thing is to lock the wheels down when it isn't being driven, to ease the weight of the car resting on the trans and motor. The spot calipers are a "Nice to have" but why bother if you are like me and have never used an e-brake for an "E"?

Umm, I've had to use the E more than once frown.gif Other times I've had to reach in the window and yank the lever when a car has begun to roll a bit.

 

I figure that with as much reworking of the brakes as I'm doing and the age of the car (nearly 30!) it just makes sense in my case to have a working mechanical brake. Yeah, it'll cost me maybe $200 extra or so but my life and the money I'm pouring into this puppy like water it's worth it.

 

To each his own, I'm not being critical of your decision - just explaining mine (shrug). Besides, if that little lever doesn't do anything it'll just look really silly to me (lol). Are you going to do a write up on that parking lock? I noticed today that the rear lines pass nicely in the tunnel, I MAY put my prop valve where it can be gotten to inside...

I rather like using my E brake to get moving off a hill by holding the ebrake and slowly letting out the clutch while releasing the Ebrake. Its easier than heal, toeing it with the regular brake. Just a personal preference I guess. Far as using it in a emergency, I usually routinely maintain the brakes, so I've not a 'brakes out' situation without alot of warning (sinking pedal, brake light comes on...). I guess I might use it if it were the only brakes, but just like motorcycles using it by itself tends to make the back end of the car pass the front end of the car. smile.gif
