sb280z
I am getting ready to do a 5.0 swap into my 76 280z and had a question to ask the forum. Is there one particular year 5.0 that is a better choice for the swap than another. I have a lead on a 86, 5speed, complete mustang and was curious if there was anthing inherintly bad about this year?
LMoore56
Don't get an 86 model. If you want EFI, get 87 and up. The 87 & 88 came with the speed density system and 89 & uphad the mass air setup. There is something about the pistons in the 86 model. If you change heads, the valves hit the pistons. The heads also have a different chamber. sb280z
I was told this was a fuel injected motor.
LMoore56
It is, but you can't modify it very well. If you do, you will need to change the pistons.
sb280z
Thank you for the info, back to searching for a donor car. My Z and now this 5.0 is the first time I have ever delt with EFI. My other toy is carberated.
s3079893
From my 'limited' experiance with the SBF. I found that if you are planning on making 'highish' power (350-400hp (flywhhel) ) it's ALOT cheaper to go carby. I bought an EFI windsor and im converting it to a carby strait lpg/propane setup because of this.
David K
Is there one particular year 5.0 that is a better choice for the swap than another. Yes. You should shoot for 89 and up if you are going with fuel injected. 87 and up have forged pistons. Go here and see a list of changes for each year. http://mustanggt.org/gtchange.htm
