goodson cam tower shim thickness .015 or .020?

I recieved my Goodson cam tower shims today and they are not the same thickness. I bought a total of 5 sets for my p79 head (planned on milling it .080). When I measured the thickness of the shims today I discovered that they are not the same. The thickness of the front cam tower shim (the one closest to the timing chain) is .015. however the four other shims measure at .020. I went through all of the shim sets and they all measure the same .015 for the front cam tower and .020 for all others.

Has anyone run into this before?

:icon54: Yes I have used the cam tower shims, you have talked about. I wouldn't worry about the thickness. What is more important is after you install them that the cam towers themselves will allow the cam to turn freely. As far as I know they were disigned that way. I haven't had any problems with them in my engine yet. Good Luck, Rich.

I have my douts too that the cam would turn being off by .025! I'll try a mock-up with an old cam and see how it goes but I don't think it is going to work.

One option is to mill the head .060, then I would have the correct thickness shims. Unfortunatly I would not have my desired end result.

If you install all 5 of the front shims and only 4 of the rest per tower you'll end up with .075 on the front and .080 on the rest. I still don't think that's right, but at least you'll only be off .050 in the front and still have an .080 lift on the rest to compensate the .080 shave on the head.

I finally got all my weekend honey-do-dis honey-do-dat list done and was able to spend some quality time with my cylinder head.

The front cam tower shims measure at .015 and are a different shape than the others so they can only be used in that location. All other shims measure at .020 and are the same shape.

First I stacked all five sets. This result was obvious but I tried it anyway. NO a cam will not turn if one tower is off by .025!!

Second I tried stacking five .015 front tower shims for a total of .075 and four .020 shims on all other towers for a total of .080. Leaving me with a difference of .005. Again, NO a cam will not turn with one tower off by .005. (at least not without force)

Third I stacked four .015 fornt tower shims and three .020 shims on all other towers for a total of .060 on ALL cam towers. YES the cam turns with great ease.

This was all very time consuming but I think it was time well spent. I'm sure there was a mix-up in the packing form Goodson and I will try to contact them in the morning.
