Air to gas intercooler?

Mike you should be able to run a fuel cell with methanol and use a pump from one of the common methanol injections systems.The pumps are internally regulated and should work fine ran directly to a N20 system fuel solenoid.I have used an older Spearco water/alcohol injection kit with a higher flow 12v pump, with good results running a maxium of 12psi of boost on a small T4/T4 making 275rwh.With methanol I am not even going to run an intercooler(if you don`t count the N20 at the track) just using two large 160lb injectors injecting methanol at boost pressure above 6psi.What I really like using the AEM EMS is that very fine controll over the amount of methanol delivered is possible.It just requires the added complexitiy of a seperate fuel system tank,regulator,lines,injectors ect.But, the end results can be well worth the effort especially being able to make 450+ rwh on 91 octain pump gas.

I think it would be interesting to dyno an engine that has been set up to run both methanol injection and water injection to see what the differences are.

 

Basic assumptions:

 

At a particular boost level - let's say 20 psi, maximize timing, fuel, and both water and meth, then see what the power and torque curves look like.

 

Reason for wanting to know:

 

I believe that water injection will provide more torque, due to the expansion of the vapor.

 

I believe that water will also keep the valves and combustion chamber cleaner.

 

Please Note:

 

These are just beliefs with no foundation, but would like to have them either proven or disproven.

i asked this question before and didnt get an answer, maybe its such a dumb question ppl didnt want to bother...

 

will isopropyl (sp?) or rubbing alcohol work similar to methanol? i have access to DRUMS of the stuff so that would be awesome if it would work as well...

probably more info than you need but a good read nonetheless.

I was reading Turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes and I saw a picture that reminded me of this thread.

 

"Janspeed intercooler uses air-conditioning system to cool intake charge on this Jaguar. Valves control Freon flow from air-conditioning system through an evaporator core inside the intercooler." (pg. 92)

 

thats all they said about the subject, just one picture. might look to Janspeed fro more info on it if anyone was interested.

You have to look at the HP required to run the AC compressor and compare to the HP gain. There is also the flow looses in boost pressure going through the second intercooler. It has to assumed that you would run a air to air intercooler to get the initial temp drop and the second intercooler with AC to get the temp lower. It seams that the simplest way would have both the AC and intercooler in a water baths with a pump circulating the water between them.

 

Nothing is free you have do an energy balance to see if the added expected output is more than the HP losses.

 

I think if AC could boost the HP on a turbo car Porsche and the rest of the turbo race teams would use them.

I think the idea is based on the "since an A/C is installed ANYWAY" concept... with the compressor turned OFF after the I/C is cooled and during hard acceleration... maybe I'm assuming here?!?

 

You have to look at the HP required to run the AC compressor and compare to the HP gain.
