Cruez
Sounds like the video card might be the culprit...
Guest Mike
Ditto... does your VC have a fan on the processor? Maybe it's clogged with dust or burned out?

veritech-z
I have a similar problem with my laptop when surfing with Firefox. It just turns off the moniter, and it can't be brought back to life. YOu can still here the fan running, and the processor "thinking", but no go on the monitor. Have to turn it off and restart. It won't do it if I'm using internet explorer, and it doesn't do it if I'm not online. It did do it once when I was trying to use photoshop offline, but I've since stopped using it, since my laptop is underpowered for photo editing anyway. So you guys are really thinking the video card wrong? what's it doing, overheating?
280zwitha383
YOu can still here the fan running, and the processor "thinking", You must have some REALLY good hearing to hear the processor. (J/k) I was going to say that it could be your shared memory (that is you ram that your motherboard uses to run it's onboard graphics) if you have onboard graphics. But, now that I think twice about, it I'm not sure if that's probable. Might be worth a shot if you have more than one stick of ram in there to swap them out and try it. 280zwitha383
For that matter if you don't have shared memory it could be the memory built into your graphics card. Cheap memory, as I have learned the hard way, is a nono .
Guest Mike
HD/SW conflict?? This is fairly rare these days though. What OS are you running? How old is your HW?
veritech-z
I've got a pentium III with 256 meg of Ram, windows XP with a 20 gig hard drive. Hardware is all stock. It came running XP, so I doubt it's that. I've never had it apart. This problem survived an operating system reload, so I suspect it's a hardware issue at this point, unless it's a really tenacious virus...when I say you can hear it thinking, you can hear it clicking angrily at you, just waiting for it's chance to suck you in and force you to play games against the master control program... Guest Mike
MAX... It's highly unlikely that it's a HD/SW/Driver conflict then. I can only assume that there is some background utility running that is overworking the CPU... perhaps causing an overheating issue too. What brand(s) of malware utilities are you running? Have you tried looking at the running processes to see what's overworking the system... tried to end those processes?
veritech-z
I use Adaware, CCleaner, and Avast!, but since my wife is using my laptop in the other room for pre-black friday deal hunting, I really can't tell you what kind of running processes it's got going. 280zwitha383
Overheating the cpu will make the computer restart. If you were to overheat the graphics chip you could cause your problems however.
Guest Mike
MAX... Some of the free adware/malware SW is pretty good. I use Adaware and Spybot. However, nothing beats a really good A/V Firewall combo and the best are not free. It's been awhile since I've researched this but I settled on NOD32 and have been happy with it. It uses the Kaspersky engine, which uses logic to decipher the "intent" of software on your system. It doesn't just look for "known signatures". When I bought it, NOD32 was one of the top 2 or 3 available in successfully finding/killing viruses. This said, even NOD32 had trouble with one pesky little worm my system had before I installed NOD32. It had embedded itself in a system file and (thanks a lot MS) the OS wouldn't allow NOD32 to delete the file. I had to boot off a CD and delete the damn think manually. It was such a smart little bastage that it kept moving every time I deleted it. After four attempts, I finally squashed the bugger.

Guest Mike
MAX... Yup. It's a shame that some people are are so lame as to create malware of any type. These losers must possess little/no feeling of self-worth.
Guest Mike
RANDY... What sites give you the most trouble? Some types of sites with lots of pics and videos are known for causing such issues. I won't mention what "types" of sites those are;)
cygnusx1
Try Zonealarm Pro. Works for my porn....I mean PC. It's a firewall, antivirus, and anti trojan. I still use Adwatch to lock my registry too. Sudden shutdown can also be caused by a weak power supply.
randy 77zt
website that shuts down computor most is a singles dating website with webcams on it.
