BLKMGK
Dammit, broke another! Different side this time but it was the inner joint again. Low speed, I heard a pop as I was about to leave the cruise. I pulled back in and pulled on everything - it all looked good Started to leave and it snapped, locking up the driver's side wheel at about 5mph. Luckily a rollback had pulled into the lot. He was scoping out the street race action for some friends and gave me a lift home for an under-the-table $40. Tomorrow I'll use up my last "spare" from the wrecking yard. Mike, were you ever able to locate those 280 stubs we talked about? If so I need them, I'm going to go CVs ASAP - this sitting on the side of the road sux! The guy I'd had lined up for them has been out of touch so if you've got some I'd appreciate it. nullbound
dude, dont use spicers. spicers are expensive and they are known to break among anyone i have ever known with a v8 in their z. it is almost always the inner joint that breaks, too. the best one to use is a brute force joint. these can be bought at autozone for about $12. they are really good pieces. they dont have a grease-fitting, so the cross is more sturdy. a good friend of mine got me on these... he uses them in his 240 that he drag races and runs 6.90's in the 1/8th mile with no problems. if anyone should break them, it should be him. he has, however, gone through a few 3.90 diffs.... crunch, crunch, crunch, hehehe. i have had a spicer go on me before... but i was rolling along at about 40 mph. my wheel didnt lock up. the half shaft makes some nice noises when that spicer goes... like a sledgehammer taking out your diff. ewwww.... just be glad you were only doing 5mph. good luck! BLKMGK
Heh, I know about Spicers. These were in the car from BEFORE I knew. I also know about the Neapco units but won't be using them once I've got CVs I was starting to think the first one was defective as this one was holding up VERY well, then boom! it's toast too. Quite a few of us have blown them, this should be my last one. Junkyard axle goes in tomorrow , CVs will go in soon when I take it off the road for the Winter along with EFI, possibly NOS, and maybe a blower if I find a good head unit... Guest Anonymous
What grease seal are you planning on using?I did my swap with info from Zhome and himha'd around for quite a while trying to decide on the R200 pinion seal or fabrication of shims.Finaly i went to a local bearing supply house to search there catilogs to see if i could find a match.Imagine my supprise to find out that the part numbers are seal dimensions. After looking up a 240 for the O/D then a 280zx for the I/D and making sure they both use the same depth seal I left having ordered the correct size seal.I don't remember the number off the top off my head but finding it should not be a problem for a good sales person. My conv used the peg leg R-200 from the 280zxt(82)with the CVCs and output flanges.Almost a complete bolt in after getting the proper seals.Strength issues aside my favorite part of this conversion is the smoothness since the on power vibration is completely gone now. jeromio
I believe he's gonna use the Scottie-Style adapter with the 280 stubs - the bonus is that the standard 280 seal will work. Pretty cool that you found a seal that works with the ZXt flanges. Maybe I'll switch out my klooged seal when I swap in the 3.54 rear. BLKMGK
I plan to get the stubs from Mike, have them drilled for 5lug - probably at a machine shop this time, have my adapters welded on by a friend who's a pro, consider having the shafts cryrotreated ($?), and then as weather gets too cold to drive it much I'll tear it down and swap them in. Might do bearings and obviously seals while I'm at it. I'll swap in heavier springs in the rear too - about 250lbs I think. I hope that will solve ALl of my breakage in back for a good time to come. Yeah, I've got Scottie's adapters for this. Got in on the first buy as I knew this might be an issue and sure enough it was
