I'm looking to upgrade my brakes, both the front and rear on my 73 240z. I want a bigger, better brake caliper on the front and a disc conversion for the rear. Anyone know where I can get them and at how much?

Datsun factory upgrade parts exsist from the 280ZX and the early 300ZX up to very nice aftermarket set-ups provided by one of our members. Of all the subjects on this forum, The brakes subject has probably the most populated. It will take some time, but do a search and read the information on front disc brakes and rear disc brakes. You will find everything from salvage options up to higher priced but still afordable new aftermarket options by SCCA (member name, not sanctioning body). The range is wide between both time spent and money spent, and there will be a lot of info there for you. This will allow you to decide the direction to go. Feel free to ask specific questions, because this is a broad subject.

How do you use the car? If you're not roadracing (and maybe even if you are) you don't need any more in the brakes department if you ask me. I've had great success with the stock brakes on my ~195 hp Z at numerous race tracks. You just have to be sure the pads and shoes are appropriate high c.f., high temp materials, and that you use fresh brake fluid. I did have to adjust the drums pretty frequently, though, which was my main reason for going to rear discs.

I mounted '82-'83 calipers and rotors using Maxima brackets (difficult to get, but I got mine through Lynchburg Nissan last year), and used an '81 ZX master cylinder. Got rid of the Z prop valve and installed a 280ZX one.

That whole deal wound up costing me ~$350-$400.

It could be done for cheaper using junkyard parts, though.

Think about why you really want bigger brakes before you start shelling out $$, though. A lot of performance can be had with the stock setup, as hard as that is to believe.

ahh brakes ...

well its like anything else performance and looks = $$. the better it looks the more it costs, and i am a believer in you get what you pay for.

as Dan said the stock stuff will work fine WHEN its as new and well setup, most Z's are not this.

but it also looks dumb under 16" + wheels.

the largest brakes i make are definitely overkill for the street-- but then so is a 3.1L , a 5L a 350 or any of the mods that we do

the rear zx or (240sx coming soon) conversion is a good rear setup if you want cheap and maintain a ebrake.

you really need to put forward

1) what you want it to look like

2) amount willing to spend

3)intended use.

i have pics online but there are more pics from customer cars on their sites.

if you dont have the rims of choice choose those first as many here started on the brake path to realize that its cheaper to do a 5 lug converion to get big brakes and a wider choice of rim selection.

like Terry stated- take your time and look around.there is a TON of brake opinions and info here.. ONE day someone will make one long combined post and put it all in ....

Project-Z,

I did the complete rear disk conversion W/ JY parts for about $50.00. I will probably need to get new rotors, and don't know yet if the calipers are 100% functional, but it's a start, and that price included complete hub/strut/spring units from 280Z, which I got 'cause the stub axles are stronger than than the 240Z units. You can see the components used here.

Although the drum brakes are probably more than adequate, I hate having to adjust them and changing brake shoes are a PITA, plus, it looks better having disks at all 4 corners. icon_biggrin.gif

For my front brake upgrade, this is what I spent:

$28 Junkyard calipers ('79ZX)

$80 New '84 300ZX rotors

$35 Machining down OD on rotors

$20 Rebuild kits for both calipers

$20 New semi-metallic pads

----

$183

I also replaced the front wheel bearings and seals, as well as using some jy 240Z hubs -- these expenses were another $50-$60. I will also be changing the master cylinder, as there is too much travel in the pedal for my taste.
