Guest RXO510
Looks like from the posts before on this subject; 75 - 78 Z booster with the 79 - 81 ZX master is a good combination to use. I was planning this setup to our Z in the near future. I'm still researching all the posts for this information. There's quite abit of info about this subject in previous posts. Good luck. Guest RXO510
If you're in the L.A. area try Clark's Auto parts in Bellflower. They are on Lakewood Blvd. They have some of the lowest prices, but I haven't checked them for Z parts. Sorry no number off the top of my head. They are listed though. Good luck. Mike C
I just put a new booster on my 72, and here is what I know... 71 booster is small diameter 72 booster is small diameter 73-78 is large diameter 71 has smaller pushrod and clevis with larger hole to go through the brake pedal. 72-78 have same clevis and the smaller pin for the brake pedal. 72 is unique to that year alone, so I wound up buying a rebuilt for 75-78 and redrilling firewall. Actually happy with the results although not with the cost... I bought a used 73 booster and 78 which were both no good and then a used 71 booster before learning about the clevis... Ended up spending $100 AND having to buy the blankety blank auto parts store one... Were it me, I'd buy the 75-78 rebuild, redrill the firewall and swap in a brake pedal from a 72 or 73 or weld yours up and redrill the hole to the smaller size. pparaska
The larger 73-78 booster won't get in the way of the clutch master on a 240-280Z, obviously, but the larger 280ZX one will on a Z.
blueovalz
The larger Z one (I used a '75) will get within about 1/4" of the clutch master cylinder without any re-positoning. FYI, this is the same size as the earlier Z 2+2 boosters.
Guest RXO510
Thanks for clearing up the booster sizes for us and the way they can fit in the Z. We thought we read all the previous posts on this subject and understood, but it's all clear to us now. Great information for us. We can start with our brake setup now. Very much appreciated. Guest RXO510
Hey Bang. From further reviews of the posts there are different size boosters that you can use, but if you have a manual trans you have to go with the smaller booster. Because the clutch master will be in the way. Or possibly redrill and move the clutch master, which I think Mike C did and you can use the bigger booster. Mike C? Why did you have to redrill holes? You mean for the booster or the clutch master? I noticed you have a 5 spd. I'm assuming it was for the clutch master. I hope. Presently have an automatic in our Z so the booster size won't affect us right now. Planning to go with a manual trans in the near future. Thanks for the info. Guest bang847
Hey guys thanks a mil for the info... I went to the junk yard a while back and grabbed a 80 280zx booster and that was way too big... then i grabbed a smaller one from a 78 280z and that was still too big.. then i grabbed one from a 74 260 2+2 and that was bigger and looked like it would fit.. but... i noticed that the booster in my 71 is the only one with a square bolt pattern.. the others had a rectangular bolt pattern... I comtemplated drilling my fire wall but decided not too.. thanks Mike for the info on the rod... i never took that into consideration.. well I actually found 2 places that will rebuild my booster.. one place in upland for $110 and another place in downtown called friction materials they said for $85 it sounds like a good deal and they are a authorized bendix dealer... I was wondering.. is there a forum for just pricing on parts? you know so we can know what to expect next time we need something.. for example the last 2 parts i got for my Z was... -painless 18 circut kit $275 -power brake booster rebuild $85 -aluminum brake drum $79.99 again thanks guys..
