Lvcien
Could someone scan the JTR mount photos with the dimensions so I can CAD them up - even if they're more expensive to have made I'd still like to get quotes... what kind of machines are needed to do it yourself? Administrators BRAAP Posted February 1, 2007 Administrators Share Posted February 1, 2007 Hmm.. This thread doesn’t give me that warm fuzzy feeling. I hope you understand, I’m not trying to hammer on you, though I do feel if someone wants to use the actual drawings from the JTR manual, they should at least purchase their own copy first. Granted, those mounts are public knowledge, but at the other extreme, if only one person purchased that manual and made photo copies for everyone else, then Mike Knell of JTR wouldn’t have any incentive to update that manual or even do another one. Also, there is a LOT of great info in the JTR conversions manual and in my mind that manual is worth twice what Mike is charging for it. As far as I know, it is the only manual of its kind that has so much “how-to†alterations and modifications regarding the S-30 Z cars, including pics, part numbers, etc in regards to performance enhancements to the entire car, not just a V-8 engine swap. A lot of the info in that manual is useful even for the L-6 or other hybrid swaps as well. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Datsun_Z_V-8.html
Lvcien
I understand, I have purchased the manual -- made a post here when I got it (http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=108277); it really is an awesome manual and I'll possibly be buying it again soon if I cant find my copy -- but I recently moved and can't seem to find it... wasn't with the car goodies
Administrators BRAAP Posted February 1, 2007 Administrators Share Posted February 1, 2007 You might try contacting Mike Knell directly. He is very personable and probably be more than willing to help out with your endeavor. It wouldn’t surprise me if he has CAD drawings already for all his mounts and brackets. If you contact him via the phone and just happen to mention “barking dogs†or “Ma bellâ€, just make sure you’re sitting in a comfortable chair and like long funny stories. Lvcien
haha, sounds good - If no one comes through tonight, I'll def. give him a call ... most of the Z guys that I've randomly spoken with/met (Tony D, Mike S, some new zcar.com guy) have all been very friendly... I suppose it's just about sharing a passion
HICKL
Speaking as a guy who runs a machine shop, I would be surprised if you get the parts made for less than double what JTR sells them for. I made my own but just because I enjoy piddling on the machines. To have my cost at his prices, I would have to set up a production run and make quite a few. If the price is even close, buy from JTR, he has done a great service for this community and I'm sure is not getting rich off he adapters. just my 2 cents, no offense meant. I'd doesn't seem like they would be, I wouldn't expect them to be very expensive to make, unless ofcourse they required CNC machining. To get the price down, they probably run a batch of them at a time. Just guessing though.
Administrators BRAAP Posted February 2, 2007 Administrators Share Posted February 2, 2007 The JTR “spacers†are “T†shaped extrusions, cut to length. They are strong where they need to be strong yet “extremely†light weight for the job they do. The set back plates are simple and appear to be either laser or plasma cut on a burn table and the holes threaded that need to be threaded. To build your own mounts CNC is pretty cool and does add some uniqueness and a personal touch to a V-8 swap, but speaking from a financial and design stand point, I’m pretty sure it will be pretty hard to CNC the spacers and set back plates for cheaper and lighter, even if you owned the CNC equipment, (not that an additional 2-5 lbs is really that big of deal). … In my opinion, the actual JTR mounts are going to be hard to beat in functionality and price. Here are my JTR mounts for Project FUZZY…
HICKL
Yah, looking at those, they incurred a pretty substantial initial investment to be able to sell at these prices.
endurorider
I got a better idea. Summit racing has a cross bar with mounts on it for 70 bucks and you cut it down to fit your engine compartment. it goes between the frame rails and it allows you to put the engine where ever you want. Its a bolt in but I welded it too . I cut off the stock mount perches and painted them black . Now I dont have the engine torque effecting the suspension. Can also weld tubes to the cross bar and run them inside to a roll cage for extra support. Fred

Fred Can you post the specific Summit Racing part you are talking about (I can't find it on the Summit Racing web site)? You bought this and installed in on your Z? If so post up some pictures so we can see how it looks.
gdv350ss
Bartman, I think this may be the item described by endurorider: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=TRD%2D4840&autoview=sku I do like the look of this engine cradle. I'm not sure if the engine height would be correct without adding plates to the frame rails to allow attachment up or down???. Endurorider can you share your experience and any pics? I've been reading and gathering information from this site for the last 18 months. I've been planning my next project which will be a V8 Z. I have gathered so much valuable information from this well managed website. My hat's off to all the posters for sharing their knowledge. Likewise to the admins for keeping this a top notch website!!
