z ya
I am installing the ground control coilvers right now and am wondering were your guys weld the ring at on these cars. I have a 70 240z. The instruc- tions say to weld it at 7" from the bottom but I have heard of people using the factory perch weld also. My car will have 26" tall tires in the rear. If I were to use the factory weld I would have to cut the sleeve down about 1.5". What do you guys think? If I use the factory weld the that is 9" from the bottom. I am thinking that with 26" tall tires I am not really going to want to set it in that low postion that ground control says too? Any help would be great! Guest Anonymous
I am planning to do this proceedure in the near future with 10 inch coilover springs 165# front and180# rear with a 2 inchs removed from struts.I plan to mount the entire units without a spring perch and use some kind of clamping device (hose clamp/c-clamp ?) below the aluminum strut sleeve tube so I can find the proper height location to place the spring perch. After I figure out where to place the spring perch; then I will weld the perch in place. Ross Corrigan sells some really long threaded sleeve tubes that can overcome location mistakes plus dress up the strut in a pretty color
Guest Anonymous
Easiest way is to use 7" threaded tubes. Weld them so the top of the threaded tube is about an inch below the top of the strut housing. Gives you plenty of adustablilty and it is idiot proof. I know because this is how I have done it several times. Mark
pparaska
I agree that the 7" sleeves are the easy way, but my rims actually touch the sleeves on my car (rear struts), and that's with 1.5" removed from the tubing and the sleeves temporarily at the top of the strut. I used a length of exhuast tubing to hold them there until the car is fully assembled. But now I can see that I will be cutting 1/2" from the Carrera coilover tubes and mounting them at the top of the rear struts. For the front I used a similar method, but the exhaust tubing rests on the brake hose bracket (for mocking up things only.)
johnc
You need to do some figuring. The wedled ring should be positioned on the strut tube so that, at your desired ride height, the adjustable spring perch is about in the middle of the threaded collar. That way you have enough adjustment either way to do corner weights and compensate for shorter or taller tires in the future. I think GC recommendations are for competition use with a ride height around 5 1/2" with 225/50-14 tires (~22" diameter). That's a bit low for street car.
