Danno74Z
Deja, Thanks, for the information on the Opti. I’m glad the hub does not have to come off, as that guy can be a real pain to pull off the end of the crank. Down the road, I will have to pull the hub to change the cam as I will be doing a complete topend. At this point I don’t know if I should bit-the-bullet and get the whole thing done right now. I’m going to have the heads port and polished by Lloyd Elliot in a couple of months so I guess I will wait to do everything at one time. Thanks for the information on the balancer that is one less thing to worry about. So I understand with the engine in the setback position (AKA JTR) the balancer is behind the steering rack, correct? Danno74Z Yes I am using JRT setbacks but the balancer is still in front of the rack. This is the only pict I have now, I'll try to get a better one tonight. Danno74Z
deja If you can get a picture tonight of the balance / steering rack I would really appreciate it. Hard to tell with the radiator cross member right there. Thanks man for your help. I think I was looking at a member who has a zx with the LT1 in the setback position and the balancer is behind the rack, maybe I was hallucinating - I don't do drugs - an occasional beer but no drugs. Bartman
Deja, For some reason you have much more clearance between the steering rack and the balancer than I do. Mine is probably something like 1/8". Maybe because you're using an automatic you have your engine farther forward than I do?
Danno74Z
deja, Wow those are great shots (you know how to use a camera) - thanks again for doing this. I was hallucinating there is plenty of room down there for the balancer. A little off the subject but I will be going with either the Bailey or Delteq Opti fix. I have got to get rid of the spark plug wires from down there. They even make a cap/cover that gets rid of the rotor from inside the OPTI. All you're left with is the optical portion of the distributor. http://www.delteq.com/

I slotted the cross member stand offs like JTR suggested. I was under the car this evening and noticed I am as far forward as the slots will allow. That would put the engine about 1/2" forward is I used the stock Datsun hole, Moving it back might give me a little more clearance for the transmission cooler lines but would make my steering shaft ever tighter to the motor mount. I am already going to have to cut some rubber off the driver's side motor mount. I think I'll leave the engine where it is.

I had to cut a good chuck off the bottom corner of mine to allow room for the steering shaft.

DavyZ
I'm going to play with it after I cut on the mount. The mount is a stout little piece. Took a little effort to say the least in order to get a chunk out and not have it look like crapola. Davy
