I am not sure if this is the proper place for this thread or not but I am curious if anyone knows of a place that sells right hand drive steering parts such as steering racks etc. any help is much appreciated.

I probably have what you need, but you might not like the cost of shipping from UK to USA.......

What exactly do you need?

I heard you can just flip around the steering rack to make a LHD into a RHD.

If it was as simple as that, Nissan would have made the racks the same for RHD and LHD layouts ( they didn't miss a trick when it came to saving money ). But the racks are handed, and for good reason; the geometry is quite different.

Well I am probably going to need a rack but I guess I need to figure out what is going to be salavageable and what definetly needs to be replaced. If I can't find one stateside, I will give you a yell ok.

I actually had all the parts to convert a car. I had found a Fairlady Z in a junkyard back in San Diego about 10 years ago. I kept all the parts until 2 years ago when I sold them. Here is what you will need;

steering rack

pedal box

gas pedal

dash

and parts you don't actually need to make it work but are different and will complete the conversion

windshield cowling

windshield wiper arms

windshield wiper linkage

gas pedal linkage

wiper/lights control stalk (the turn signal stalk and this one are flipped compared to the LHD ones and just flipping over a U.S. one will not be the same)

Also, you will need to fab up a mounting bracket for the steering column as well because it's actually welded to the frame.

So fenderbender02, this steering rack is part of an LHD to RHD conversion then? I didn't realise that.

As AKWIKZ has pointed out, you'll need a lot more than a steering rack to do that properly.........

We do quite a lot of LHD to RHD conversions here in the UK, and very best way to do it is to have a complete RHD organ donor on hand. You can however do a good enough job with just the right components. Have you got all the data you need? The factory RHD parts lists are going to be a useful reference for you. Let me know if I can help.

I have a 71 Fairlady Z and you can flip the rack over, If you do a search there is a detailed write up of what you need to do to make it work, Its pretty easy if I remember right.

I beg to differ. Maybe it can be made to work, but the result will still be an upside-down LHD rack. The pinion gear wil be on top of the actual rack instead of its original orientation, and the adjuster will be 180 degrees away from where it is supposed to be. The angle of the pinion will also be wrong - which will put undue strain on the lower steering uj.

I don't think it is wise to cut corners where steering and braking components are concerned. Why use an inverted LHD rack when the correct RHD item is readily available?

I apoligize I should have been a little more specific. I am trying to buy a fairlady but if I can't get it then yes this would be a rhd to lhd conversion.

Here are some pics of my RHD pedal box and steering rack. May or may not help. Sorry, some images are not the best quality. Car is stripped so if you want any particular photo taken let me know.

(FD 02 - I remember Shellharbour in the 60s and 70s when it was a fishing hamlet and weekend holiday place. Now, as they say, it's 'tar and cement')

Actually that helps out a bunch. Thanks for taking the time to post those. Now if I can just find the right car then everything will fall into place.
