Spark Plug Wire Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Yes, I've done several searches [even Grumpyvette specific] prior to posting w/o luck. It's time for a spring tune and conflicting sales pitches from various plug wire venders has lead me to the HybridZ community for opinions.

Resistance per foot 40, 50, 150; size 8mm, 8.5mm 10.4mm [bigger was pushed as better years back but now quality or quanity?], material, yadda, yadda.

Relevant engine data:

454, 10.2:1 compression, Mallory Unilite, MSD 6AL box, MSD Blaster 2 coil, headers

Vehicle use: Street/Strip so radio interferance is an issue.

I'll use these opinions for the 406 in my 260Z once it's up and running, so this really is a HybridZ question, but with initial application in my Chevelle.

No specific budget, but I don't want to waste money buying marketing hype.

WHAT Spark Plug Wires would you recommend?

THANK YOU

Ive found these , or similar sets of TAYLOR 10.4mm matching YOUR application (TAYLOR 10.4mm ) to be the best Ive ever used

I had several intermitent computer problems with other wires that were not shielded as well, that caused my EFI controller to get bad data at times from EMD (electric/magnetic field interfearance)

ask about the ends and verify before purchase, most big blocks require strait 180 degree or 135 degree plug boots, the 90 degree plug boots most SBC s use won,t work well!

BTW

IVE had the same set on my race vette for more than 7 years now and they still look like new and work with low resistance, I doubt they would be necessary on a stock ignition, but the vettes hardly stock and the ignition will get your full attention if you pull a plug while its idling if your grounded

If you are not running sensitive electronics, i.e. EFI, DIS, some form of data logging or other onboard computer, etc, then Jacobs, MSD, Mallory etc are all good “quality” performance wires.

If you are running EFI or other sensitive computerized electronics, then Magnecor or Nology are your ONLY options (and they are EXCELLENT wires BTW), as ALL other wires, can and will affect those electronics to some degree, depending on installation, grounding, shielding etc, some more than others. Just search “resets” in the Mega squirt section of this forum and you’ll see SEVERAL issues that when finally resolved, most, if not all ended up being EMF from inexpensive ignition high tension leads.

Hope that helps,
